WVU’s Homestand Continues Tuesday Night Against North Carolina Central

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia's 16-day, four-game homestand continues Tuesday night with a nonconference meeting against North Carolina Central of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Eagles posted an 18-13 record last year and lost to Delaware State in the MEAC Tournament semifinals.

Veteran coach LeVelle Moton returns preseason All-MEAC guard Po'Boigh King, a 6-fooot-4, 195-pound junior from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

King is averaging a team-best 17.4 points per game, while connecting on 45.2% of his field goal attempts. He also leads the team with 19 steals, while making a team-leading 25 3-pointers.

Keishon Porter, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound senior guard, is averaging 10.9 points per game, while shooting 51.2% from the floor.

Timmy Adedire, a 6-foot-4, 208-pound senior forward, is tops on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.7 boards per contest.

North Carolina Central is coming off a 78-77 victory over Gardner-Webb last Saturday. King led the Eagles with 28 points, hitting 9 of 17 from the floor, grabbing six rebounds and making two steals.

Isaac Parson, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, came off the bench to contribute 13 points.

The Eagles (4-7) began the season by losing four straight before topping William & Mary 78-76 on Nov. 16. North Carolina Central has won three of its last four with a 70-67 loss to Radford sandwiched in between.

Meanwhile, West Virginia (6-2) rallied from a five-point, second-half deficit to down Georgetown 73-60 in a Big 12-Big East Battle game at the WVU Coliseum last Friday night.

The Hoyas, leading 30-28 at halftime and 41-36 on Malik Mack's 3-pointer with 14:46 left, got just a Drew Fielder layup over the next six minutes as the Mountaineers went on a 17-2 run to take control of the game.

"In the first half, we were just stuck in the mud a little bit and couldn't get much going, but thankfully, defensively, we were able to keep it fairly tight going into the half," West Virginia coach Darian DeVries said afterward.

"We just weren't getting a lot of movement, and I thought Georgetown did a nice job keeping us off-balance a little bit by switching defenses, and that's one of the things we haven't seen a lot of yet," DeVries added. "We've got to get better in that area of flowing a little bit better, but in the second half, our movement was a lot better, and we were able to get into transition, which also helped."

Javon Small scored a game-high 26 and is now averaging a team-best 19.9 points per game. He scored a season-high 31 in West Virginia's overtime victory over third-ranked Gonzaga in the Bahamas and added 26 a day later against Louisville.

He also tallied 23 in a home win against Iona and has reached double figures in all eight games so far this season.

Tucker DeVries, who tallied a season-high 26 in a recent victory over 24th-ranked Arizona, is contributing 14.9 points per game, including a team-best 26 3-pointers.

Amani Hansberry is averaging 11.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, while Toby Okani shows averages of 9.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

West Virginia's other starter is sophomore defensive specialist Sencire Harris, averaging 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest.

The Mountaineers are averaging 77.8 points per game and are shooting 44% as a team. Opponents are shooting just 38.9% overall, including 30.3% from 3-point distance. WVU is forcing an average of 14.6 turnovers and is outscoring its opponents by an average of nine points per game.

Tuesday night's game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.

Mountaineer Sports Network radio coverage with Tony Caridi, Brad Howe and David Kahn begins at 6 p.m. on stations throughout West Virginia and online via WVUsports.com and the Varsity Network and WVU Gameday apps.

Following Tuesday night's game, West Virginia's homestand continues against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Dec. 14, and concludes on Sunday, Dec. 22 against Mercyhurst.

Tickets for those games are on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office and can be purchased by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
