MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the National Scholar Player of the Year as announced by United Soccer Coaches.
 
Ors Navarro also earned a spot on the Scholar All-America First Team alongside graduate defender Max Broughton while junior forward Marcus Caldeira and graduate midfielder Ryan Baer were named to the second team. All four players were also named Scholar All-South Region.
 
With the four selections this year, West Virginia has doubled its amount of Scholar All-Americans, giving them eight total. The other four were Andy Bevin (2013, 2014), Jack Elliot (2016), Yutaro Tsukada (2023), and Jackson Lee (2023).
 
A forward from Castellon, Spain, Ors Navarro was named the Sun Belt Player and Offensive Player of the Year after finishing fourth in the nation with 15 goals and fifth with 34 points. He has also been named a First Team All-American by United Soccer Coaches and a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.


In the classroom, he has a 4.0 GPA while pursuing his master's degree in sport management. During his time at WVU, he has earned spots on the Dean's List, Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, and Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll.

Broughton played in 22 games with 21 starts, leading all Mountaineer field players with 1,874 minutes played this season. The Second Team All-American and All-Sun Belt first team selection anchored a back line that produced 10 shutouts and allowed just 3.04 shots on goal per game while also contributing with an assist on the offensive end of the field.
 
Off the field, Broughton is pursuing his master's degree in sport management and currently has a 4.0 GPA. Previously, he had a 3.87 GPA while earning his bachelor's degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from WVU. Throughout his collegiate career, he has been named a First Team Academic All-American by College Sports Communicators as well as earned spots on the Sun Belt and Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, the Missouri Valley Scholar-Athlete Team and twice on the CSC Academic All-District Team.
 
Caldeira tallied 11 goals during his junior season, helping the Mountaineers to a 13-2-7 record and the Sun Belt regular-season and tournament titles, the first in program history. He was named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team, the second All-Conference honor of his career. Caldeira was also named a College Soccer News First-Team All-American and United Soccer Coaches Second-Team All-American in 2023.
 
In the classroom, Caldeira has a 4.0 GPA while studying finance. The Mississauga, Ontario native was named the 2024 Academic All-America Team Member of the Year by College Sports Communicators and is a two-time CSC Academic All-American. Caldeira was also the Sun Belt Elite Award winner and has also been named to the Sun Belt and Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll throughout his career.
 
Baer played 20 games with 19 starts for West Virginia in the midfield this season and was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team for the first time in 2024. He finished his career after playing in 92 games over five years with 87 starts, the most in program history.
 
In the classroom, Baer has a 4.0 GPA while pursuing his master's degree in Sport Management after posting a 3.74 GPA as an undergraduate and earning his bachelor's degree in Sport Management. He was named a CSC First Team Academic All-American and is a three-time Academic All-District selection. The Huntersville, North Carolina native has also been a member of the Sun Belt and Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll as well as the Academic All-MAC and Academic All-Big 12 teams.
