MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In a top-20 matchup at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, the No. 16 West Virginia University men's soccer team and No. 11 South Carolina played to a 1-1 draw, Saturday night. The Mountaineers go to 5-1-3 this season and 1-0-2 in the Sun Belt while the Gamecocks are now 7-1-2 and 1-0-2 as well in conference play.
Â
Junior Isaac Scheer scored his first goal of the season for WVU while junior Jacob Redenfors and graduate student Aurélien Cormier each had an assist.
Â
In an evenly contested match, the Mountaineers outshot South Carolina, 8-6, and had a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal. For the first time this season, WVU had less corners than its opponent as it had just two compared to six for the Gamecocks.
Â
Normally a second-half team, the Mountaineers got off to a fast start as Scheer scored in the 12th minute off a low cross from Redenfors. That was the only shot for WVU in the half, but it was enough to hold the lead at the break, the first time this season the Mountaineers have been in front after 45 minutes.
Â
After just three combined shots in the first half, the two teams combined for 11 in the second. The first opportunity came for WVU in the 50th minute when a shot by Tyler Londono Zapata went just wide. Another prime chance for the Mountaineers came in 66th minute off their first corner kick of the night when sophomore Julen Recalde's header at the near post was saved by South Carolina goalkeeper Noah Scheidweiler.
Â
In the 68th minute, redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer made a diving save to keep WVU in front for the time being, but just two minutes later, South Carolina found the equalizer.
Â
The Mountaineers looked like they were going to have a chance to retake the lead in the 73rd minute as Scheer was taken down in the box, but after VAR review, it was ruled no foul.
Â
WVU got the benefit of VAR in the 84th minute after South Carolina found the back of the net. After review, it was ruled the Gamecock goalscorer pushed off the back of junior Civan de Jesus Ferreira and the goal was disallowed.
Â
The last chance of the game came in the 87th minute when Redenfors fired a free kick from just outside the box on frame, but it was saved by Scheidweiler.
Â
The Mountaineers return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 9, at No. 23 Old Dominion. Kickoff from Norfolk, Virginia is set for 7 p.m.Â
