
Braithwaite Picked on Final Day of MLB Draft

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fifth-year senior right-handed pitcher Trey Braithwaite of the West Virginia University baseball team was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 16th round of the MLB Draft on Tuesday.
The Winchester, Virginia, native was the 483rd overall pick and became the third Mountaineer drafted this season, as well as the 105th all time. In total, WVU has had multiple players selected in nine of the last 10 MLB Drafts.
Also on Tuesday, incoming freshman right-hander Gavin Van Kempen was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round. The Castleton, New York, native was the 607th overall selection.
Braithwaite went 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA for the Mountaineers last spring. He notched 36 strikeouts in 37.0 innings and finished with eight saves. Overall, opponents hit just .151 against the right-hander.
A transfer from Navy, Braithwaite was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and earned NCBWA All-America Third Team honors. Additionally, he was included on the organization's Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List.
With the selection, Braithwaite became the first WVU player drafted by the Reds since John Hale in 1971.
On Monday, junior right-hander Jacob Watters was a fourth-round pick (124th overall) of the Oakland Athletics, while junior outfielder Victor Scott II was taken in the fifth round (157th overall) by St. Louis.
