West Virginia Makes Trek to Texas Tech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team begins its final stretch of the 2021-22 regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 23, as the Mountaineers travel to Lubbock, Texas, to square off against Texas Tech.
Tipoff against the Lady Raiders is set for 8 p.m. ET, inside United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock. Wednesday's contest will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, with Ron Thulin and Brandi Poole on the call. Additionally, fans can listen to the game on the WVU Gameday App, WVUsports.com or on the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 98.3 FM/1490 AM (WBKE), with Dan Zangrilli on the call. West Virginia (11-13, 4-10 Big 12) and Texas Tech (10-15, 3-11 Big 12) meet for the 21st time on Wednesday. WVU is 15-5 all-time against TTU, including 6-3 when the two teams play in Lubbock.
The Mountaineers have taken the last 10 meetings against the Lady Raiders. During that streak, WVU is averaging 74.6 points per game, while holding Tech to 57.6 points per game. Of note, West Virginia has held Texas Tech to 53 points in each of the last two meetings and has outscored TTU by double digits in each of those contests.
Earlier this season, WVU met Texas Tech in its third Big 12 contest of the season on Jan. 12, when the Mountaineers picked up a 64-53 win over the Lady Raiders for their first conference win of the year. WVU was co-led in scoring by junior guard KK Deans and senior guard Madisen Smith, who each tallied 15 points in the first game against TTU.
Additionally, freshman guard JJ Quinerly finished the game with 11 points, while junior forward Esmery Martinez paced West Virginia on the glass with seven rebounds.
Texas Tech enters Wednesday's contest after falling to Kansas, 71-68, on Feb. 19, in Lubbock. The Lady Raiders have lost eight of their last nine games, with their only win during that span coming in a 97-87, upset win over then-No. 15 Oklahoma on Feb. 16 in Norman.
Senior guard Vivian Gray continues to pace TTU's offense and is averaging 20.9 points per game this season. She has tallied 20 points or more in 11 of her 17 games this year, including her last five games. Since Feb. 5 at Kansas State, Gray is averaging 26.8 points per game and has a pair of 30-point performances during that span.
Senior forward Taylah Thomas leads Tech in the rebounding department, with 221 boards and an average of 8.8 per game.
West Virginia is coming off a 67-58 loss to No. 14/14 Texas on Feb. 20, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers were led by Martinez, who tallied a team-high 13 points. She was joined in double figures by Smith, who finished the contest with 10 points. Martinez and fifth-year senior center Blessing Ejiofor each hauled in six rebounds to tie for the team lead on the glass.
Smith has served as WVU's leading scorer over the last six games, averaging 13.5 points per game, and is one of three Mountaineers averaging double figures during that span. She is joined by Quinerly (12.8 ppg) and senior forward Kari Niblack (10.7 ppg).
Martinez has been West Virginia's leading rebounder since Feb. 2 at TCU, hauling in 40 boards and averaging 6.7 per game over the last six games.
