Mountaineers to Battle Morehead State Tuesday Night
November 14, 2022 06:30 PM | Men's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Morehead State will be making its first WVU Coliseum appearance in 42 years when the Eagles meet West Virginia in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
Morehead State (2-1) opened the season with an 88-53 loss at 13th-ranked Indiana but has since defeated Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Ky.) 99-58 and Bellarmine 62-55 last Saturday.
Bellarmine began its season with a 67-66 victory over Louisville.
Morehead's starting lineup ranges from 5-feet-11 to 6-foot-5, with 6-foot-10, 250-pound senior Alex Gross playing the post. He's averaging 11 points and 6.7 rebounds per game after transferring from Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) where he was an NAIA All-American.
Gross had a 10-point, 11-rebound, double-double in the Louisville victory.
Mark Freeman, a senior point guard, was named to the preseason All-OVC team and leads Eagles with an average of 13.5 points per game.
Guards Drew Thelwell (12.7 ppg.) and Jake Wolfe (10.3 ppg.) are also averaging double figures.
"Their guards are small and quick; good shooters - a lot like Mount St. Mary's. They will run a lot of pick-and-roll stuff," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.
West Virginia (2-0) is coming off an impressive 81-56 victory at rival Pitt last Friday night.
Guard Joe Toussaint came off the bench to lead West Virginia with 18 points, five assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Guard Erik Stevenson contributed 16 points, forward Mohamed Wague 11 and forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. 10.
Wague made all five of his shot attempts while grabbing four rebounds in just 14 minutes of work coming off the bench against the Panthers.
West Virginia shot a sizzling 52.6% from the floor and outscored Pitt's bench 42-10.
It was WVU's widest margin of victory against the Panthers since Jan. 17, 1968, when Huggins was a high school freshman.
The veteran coach said he was generally happy with the way his team performed last Friday night but admits there is still plenty of room for growth.
"We're not as consistent as we need to be (defensively), but we're getting better," Huggins said. "We were a lot better against Pitt than we were in the opener but we're still not where we need to be.
"We need to be where we can stop people. The good teams are able to stop people when they need to stop people and we're not there yet," he added.
Tuesday night's game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be televised on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ (Nick Farrell, Warren Baker and Angelica Trinone). Mountaineer Sports Network coverage with Tony Caridi, Jay Jacobs and David Kahn on stations throughout West Virginia, online via WVUsports.com and the mobile apps WVU Gameday and The Varsity Network begins at 6 p.m.
The game broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 375.
Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
