"It seems to be the typical situation we've gotten ourselves in this year, with another ranked team coming to town," coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We're excited to have Georgetown this week. Obviously, they come with a ton of success and tradition, so it's going to be a battle Thursday night."
In its last outing, WVU suffered a 2-0 defeat to No. 7 Penn State, on Sept. 2, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Despite leading the Nittany Lions, 13-10, in shots, the Mountaineers couldn't overcome PSU's (4-0) back-to-back, first-half goals at the 29:01 and 30:04 marks. The Mountaineers tallied five shots, including three on goal, before the 20-minute mark, but WVU couldn't find the back of the net in the 90 minutes.
Thursday's matchup marks the 25th all-time meeting between West Virginia and Georgetown, as the Mountaineers hold a 16-6-2 advantage in the series. Each team has been ranked in the last four regular-season matches, dating back to 2016. Also of note, the two teams' 24 meetings all-time are the most between WVU and any of its other 116 all-time opponents. The Mountaineers' 16 victories over the Hoyas are the most for West Virginia over any other opponent in program history.
The two teams first met in WVU's inaugural season on Oct. 9, 1996, with the Mountaineers defeating Georgetown at home, 1-0. Since that first matchup, West Virginia and Georgetown have met in the regular season and in NCAA Tournament play, with 22 regular-season matches and two tournament matches. The two programs last met in 2019, with a 1-0 Mountaineer victory over No. 25 Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Dave Nolan enters his 18th season at the helm of Georgetown, boasting 229 career wins. He has led the team to 11-straight NCAA Tournaments and two College Cup semifinal appearances. The Hoyas are 2-0-3 so far this season and are coming off back-to-back, 1-1 draws with Dartmouth on Sept. 2, and Princeton on Sept. 5.
Junior Gia Vicari leads the team with three goals on the year, and senior Maya Fernandez-Powell follows with one goal and two assists. Junior keeper Allie Augur leads the squad in goal with 17 saves, starting all five games this season.
