December 04, 2021 11:24 AM | Wrestling
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team begins the month of December in Athens, Ohio to duel with the Ohio University Bobcats inside the Convocation Center on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. ET.
Sunday's match marks the 56th meeting between the two programs and fans can catch all of the action on ESPN+. Live stats will be available on Trackwrestling.
"They're (Ohio) a university that's recruiting the same kids we are out of Ohio and PA (Pennsylvania) and West Virginia, so (it's) certainly a rivalry that we value, and we want to win," fourth-year coach Tim Flynn said. "We've really been working with each kid about developing a game plan and going out and wrestling their style, their way, and sticking to it for seven minutes. So, we want to see that."
WVU (1-2) holds a 36-19 advantage over OU (0-1) in the all-time series, which includes a 21-4 victory in the first meeting back in 1922. The teams have traded home victories in the last two encounters after not matching up with one another in 2018 and 2019.
The Bobcats came out of the decade 5-3 against the Mountaineers before WVU responded with a 36-3 win in last season's dual to open 2021.
Sophomore Peyton Hall (165), junior Scott Joll (174), and redshirt sophomore Michael Wolfgram (HWT) all captured major decisions and combined for seven takedowns in the win. Redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Boyd (141), sophomore Brayden Roberts (149), redshirt junior Alex Hornfeck (157), and senior Jackson Moomau (184) added four decisions to the 33-point victory as well.
In the polls, three Mountaineers remain in this week's rankings as redshirt senior Killian Cardinale (125) ranks in the top 10 of both FloWrestling and InterMat at No. 6/8. Hall jumps to No. 11/15 at 165 pounds, while Wolfgram continues on as an honorable mention by FloWrestling and climbs to No. 25 on InterMat's list at heavyweight.
Three Bobcats enter the dual ranked in their respective weight classes – HR/27 Alec Hagan (149) – 24/26 Jordan Slivka (157) – -/28 Sal Perrine (174). This dual will be OU's second of the season after falling 25-12 to Clarion on Friday. It will also be the Bobcat's first home contest, as they started the season by competing in three straight open tournaments. In the most recent tournament, Slivka and Perrine won their weight classes at the Navy Classic on Nov. 20.
Next up, West Virginia returns to the WVU Coliseum to face Glenville State on Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. ET.
