SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – West Virginia players, coaches and staff arrived in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Christmas Day to continue preparations for its 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl game against Minnesota at Chase Field on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
The Golden Gophers arrived two days ago late Thursday afternoon.
West Virginia and Minnesota are playing for the first time ever.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to have a team meeting tonight and will then resume on-site preparations Sunday afternoon.
Another practice is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
West Virginia had eight practices in Morgantown from Dec. 11 through yesterday. The team was off for three days Dec. 12-14, and again Dec. 19-21.
It's West Virginia's 39th bowl appearance all-time and the second under third-year coach Neal Brown, while Minnesota is making its 22nd all-time bowl trip and third under coach P.J. Fleck.
"We've been back in Morgantown and got to watch some games on TV really anticipating our game playing against a really good Minnesota team," said Brown. "I know coach Fleck will have his guys ready. We're excited to be here and really appreciative."
On Monday, a special Meet and Greet at the game watch home of the Arizona Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association, Half Moon Windy City Sports Grill, will take place from 4-7 p.m. The Mountaineer Sports Network (MSN) will be producing a live broadcast on-site hosted WVU play-by-play announcer Tony Caridi and featuring MSN personalities Jed Drenning, Dwight Wallace, Dale Wolfley and Dan Zangrilli.
On game day, alumni, friends and fans are invited to the WVU Guaranteed Rate Bowl Pre-Game Party from 4-7 p.m. local time at Copper Blues in the Cityscape Dining and Shopping Complex, a short walk to Chase Field.
It will be an evening filled with Mountaineer pride, WVU giveaways (while supplies last) and food and beverage specials. The Pride of West Virginia Pep Band, WVU Cheerleaders and Mountaineer Mascot will make a special appearance at 4 p.m.
Both events are being presented by the West Virginia University Alumni Association, Mountaineer Athletic Club and WVU Foundation.
Tuesday night's game will kick off at 10:15 ET and will be televised nationally on ESPN. It's one of five bowl games that day, in addition to the Birmingham Bowl, First Responder Bowl, Liberty Bowl and Holiday Bowl.
Guaranteed Rate Bowl tickets remain on sale and can be purchased through the Mountaineer Ticket Office by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
