West Virginia Meets Kentucky in Lexington for Big 12/SEC Challenge

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team is set to compete in the 2021 Big 12/SEC Challenge, as the Mountaineers travel to Lexington, Kentucky, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, to square off against No. 16/17 Kentucky.
Tipoff against the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. ET, from Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. Wednesday's contest will be broadcast on the SEC Network on ESPN+. WVU's matchup against Kentucky marks its sixth contest in the Big 12/SEC Challenge since the 2016-17 season, when the event expanded to its current 10-team format. West Virginia is 4-1 since 2016-17 in the challenge, including 2-0 on the road.
WVU has won its last two games in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, defeating Tennessee, 79-73 (OT), in 2020 and No. 10/8 Mississippi State, 71-65, in 2019. In the annual event, the Mountaineers are averaging 67.4 points per game, while holding the opposition to 64.6 points per game.
West Virginia (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) and Kentucky (4-1, 0-0 SEC) meet for the fourth time on Wednesday, including the second time under coach Mike Carey. Kentucky leads the all-time series, 2-1, but the two teams are even at 1-1 when playing in Lexington.
WVU last met UK on March 28, 2005, in Lexington, and defeated the Wildcats, 80-75, as a part of the 2005 Postseason WNIT. Prior to that, Kentucky took the first two matchups in the series. West Virginia is averaging 68.7 points per game in its series with UK.
Kentucky is coming off a 74-52 win over La Salle on Nov. 27, at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. With the win, UK has now won its last two games and four of five to open the season. The Wildcats' only loss of the season came on Nov. 14, at Indiana, 88-67, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll. Kentucky is 4-0 at home this season and is averaging 86.3 points per game when playing in Memorial Coliseum.
UK's offensive attack is led by forward Dre'una Edwards and All-American guard Rhyne Howard, who are both averaging 19.2 points per game this season. Howard also paces the squad in rebounding (7.8 per game), steals (3.0 per game) and blocks (1.2 per game).

Junior forward Esmery Martinez led the Mountaineers in scoring against the Cougars, with a team-high 18 points. Additionally, junior guard KK Deans finished in double figures in the game, with 17, and has now tallied 10 points or more in her last 18 games.
