WVU Travels to North Carolina for Two Nonconference Duals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team begins a weekend road trip in North Carolina against Davidson on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. ET, before clashing with No. 5 North Carolina State on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m.
Friday's match will be on a paid stream via Davidson All-Access for $5.95, while live stats can be found on Trackwrestling. Fans can catch all of Sunday's action on ACC Network Extra and keep up with live stats at Trackwrestling as well.
"I don't know a lot about Davidson, so hopefully we can show some improvement over our match with Oklahoma," fourth-year coach Tim Flynn said. "Obviously, NC State is similar to Oklahoma. They are a highly ranked team, which gives our guys a lot of opportunities to see where they're at and hopefully make a name for themselves."
Davidson (0-3) welcomes West Virginia (0-1) into the Baker Sports Complex six days after losing all three matches in the program's first quad meet in history. Its opening dual came against Chattanooga, which WVU will face as part of a tri-meet to close out the month of December on Monday, Dec. 20.
WVU has only matched up with Davidson twice entering Friday's dual. The Mountaineers hold a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series, including a 45-0 rout at home in the in the final stretch of the 2013-14 campaign. The first bout between the two came in 1961, when the Mountaineers defeated the Wildcats ,27-3, at Davidson.
From there, the Mountaineers travel to back-to-back-to-back defending ACC Champion NC State two days later in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is the Wolfpack's first dual of the season, as they opened with consecutive tournament-style events. NCSU currently holds a 4-2 lead in the all-time series, which includes a 26-10 win in the last meeting when NC State ranked No. 9 during coach Flynn's first year at the helm of the Mountaineers (2019). Senior Caleb Rea is the only starter left who competed against the Wolfpack three years ago at 141 pounds.
After losing in the first meeting to NC State in 1951, WVU won the next two duals in 1952 and 1953. Sixty-three years later, the nonconference foe has secured victories in the last three encounters (2016-17, 2019).
In the polls, three Mountaineers remain steady in the rankings as redshirt senior Killian Cardinale stays at No. 8/9 at 125 pounds, sophomore Peyton Hall holds No. 14/16 at 165 pounds, and redshirt sophomore Michael Wolfgram stands as an honorable mention by FloWrestling and debuts at No. 33 on InterMat list at heavyweight.
Wolfgram comes off a 3-2 win over No. 17 Josh Heindselman in the team's loss to No. 17 Oklahoma. The redshirt sophomore avenged a 6-2 loss in last year's meeting with Heindselman, who dropped two spots in this week's rankings to No. 19. Hall had a dominant performance against OU's Troy Mantanona at 165 pounds. The Chester, West Virginia, native captured a 10-1 major decision over Mantanona to remain undefeated (6-0) to begin his sophomore season.
