Mountaineers Host Iowa State on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team returns to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 2, as the Mountaineers host Iowa State for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Opening tip against the Cyclones is set for 2 p.m. ET on ESPNU, with Tyler Denning and Renee Montgomery on the call. Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will call the game for the Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. The game can be found on Jack-FM 100.9, as well as affiliates across the state, the TuneIn Radio App, Sirius/XM 375 and WVUsports.com.
"They can score, they can score the basketball," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "They run a lot of motion stuff and a lot of stuff that'll spread you out. Plus, their five will pop out and shoot the 3. They have five scorers on the floor at all times."

Pregame activities to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day will take place from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in women's section of the basketball practice facility, with WVU's gymnastics, volleyball, rifle and rowing teams all taking part in the event. The 500 dads at the Gold and Blue Gates will receive a fee #GirlDad poster.
The Mountaineers (13-5, 3-4 Big 12) and the Cyclones (12-7, 4-4 Big 12) meet for the 16th time in the series on Sunday. WVU holds the all-time advantage in the series, leading 10-5, and are 5-2 against ISU when playing in Morgantown. West Virginia and Iowa State split the season series a year ago, with each team winning at home. The Mountaineers have won five of their last six games against the Cyclones inside the WVU Coliseum, including the last two matchups.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 73-60 loss at TCU on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Redshirt senior guard Tynice Martin led West Virginia in scoring at TCU, posting 24 points to tally her fifth 20-point performance of the season and the 29th of her career. Martin's 24 points against the Horned Frogs helped her move to No. 4 on WVU's all-time scoring list, with 1,839 career points. Redshirt junior guard Kysre Gondrezick also scored in double figures, adding 13 points and three triples for West Virginia. Junior center Blessing Ejiofor and sophomore forward Kari Niblack paced the Mountaineer on the glass, tallying eight rebounds, while senior guard Lucky Rudd also dished out six assists in the loss.
Iowa State is led by coach Bill Fennelly who is in his 25th season at the helm for Iowa State. Fennelly boasts a record of 517-269 during his time with ISU and has 683 wins during his 32-year coaching career. Iowa State is coming off an 83-62 loss to Baylor in Waco, Texas, on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Prior to that, the Cyclones won three consecutive Big 12 contests, grabbing wins over Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Kansas. Iowa State is No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 4 nationally with an 78.5% free throw percentage. ISU guard/forward Ashley Joens was named the Big 12 Co-Player of the Week, after averaging 17.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in ISU's wins over Kansas State and Kansas.
