MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two nationally ranked teams will meet Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum when West Virginia plays host to old Southern Conference rival Richmond.
The 19th-ranked Spiders will be making their first visit to Morgantown since 1976 when coach Bob Huggins was a Mountaineer player.
Richmond, now 4-0, owns early season victories over Morehead State (82-74), Kentucky (76-64), Wofford (77-72) and Northern Iowa (78-68).
Six-10 senior forward Grant Golden's 15.3 points-per-game average leads a well-balanced Spider attack that boasts double-digit scorers at all five starting positions.
Senior 6-foot-7 forward Nathan Cayo is averaging 14.5 points, 6-foot senior guard Blake Francis is averaging 13.8 points, 6-foot-7 sophomore forward Tyler Burton is averaging 12.8 points and 5-foot-9 senior guard Jacob Gilyard is averaging 12.3 points.
Richmond is coached by Chris Mooney, now in his 16th season there where he owns a 277-222 record.
No. 11 West Virginia (5-1) had to rally from 10 points down in the first half to defeat feisty North Texas Friday afternoon at the Coliseum.
Guard Sean McNeil rediscovered his shooting stroke with a team-high 15 points, guard Taz Sherman came off the bench to score 13 and junior forward Derek Culver produced his 19th career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Sunday's game will pit two ranked teams at the Coliseum for the first time since Dec. 5, 2017, when No. 15 West Virginia knocked off No. 18 Virginia 68-61.
It will be the 55th all-time meeting between these two old rivals with West Virginia owning a commanding 41-13 advantage.
The last meeting took place in Las Vegas as part of the Las Vegas Invitational on Nov. 26, 2015 when WVU came away with a 67-59 victory.
In Richmond's last game here in Morgantown on Feb. 25, 1976, a 109-84 Mountaineer victory, Bob Huggins played in that game and produced five points, four rebounds and two assists.
The game will tip at 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN (Rich Hollenberg and Robbie Hummel).
