MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team continues its three-match road trip by traveling to No. 9 Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 17, in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Action at the Cowboys' Gallagher-Iba Arena is slated to begin at 8 p.m. ET. Fans can follow along with the Mountaineers with the match's live stream, courtesy of ESPN+. Live stats also are available at TrackWrestling.com.
"This is a huge test for our squad," WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "We're looking for some consistency and aggression."
Friday marks the Mountaineers' second Big 12 Conference road match of the season and first since Nov. 16, at Northern Colorado. WVU (3-6, 0-1 Big 12) has never defeated Oklahoma State (5-1, 2-0 Big 12), trailing 14-0 in the all-time series. Last season, the Cowboys topped West Virginia, 40-3, on Jan. 18, 2019, at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 36-3 loss to No. 4 Virginia Tech on Jan. 11, at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams claimed WVU's lone win of the night, earning a 4-2 decision over the Hokies' Stanley Smeltzer at 197 pounds. The win improved the Coal City, West Virginia, native's record to 22-0 on the year, including 9-0 in dual-meet action.
Adams, the 2020 Southern Scuffle's Most Outstanding Wrestler, is ranked No. 2 by TrackWrestling in the 197-pound division, the highest a Mountaineer has ever been ranked in the poll that began in 2015. He also sits No. 2 in the The Open Mat and Intermat rankings this week. Adams leads the squad in pins (four) and major decisions (six) and is in a three-way tie for the team lead with a pair of technical fall wins this season.
Additionally, junior Nick Kiussis sits No. 27 in this week's TrackWrestling rankings at 165 pounds, while The Open Mat ranks him No. 33 in his class.
Friday also marks West Virginia's fourth opponent ranked inside the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll this season, including its second straight match against a top-10 foe.
The Cowboys are led by 29th-year coach John Smith, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist. Smith has led his alma mater to five NCAA team titles, most recently in 2006, and has coached 32 individual national champions. This season, the Cowboys own a pair of top-25 victories, as they took down then-No. 12 Minnesota, 21-12, on Nov. 24, before topping then-No. 12 Princeton, 18-15, on Dec. 6. OSU also has tallied two Big 12 dual-meet wins this season, including a 23-9 decision over Oklahoma on Dec. 15. Last time out, Oklahoma State defeated Northern Colorado, 36-3, on Jan. 12, in Stillwater.
Nine OSU wrestlers appear in various polls this week, including five listed in the top 10 according to at least one outlet. The Cowboys' Boo Lewallen ranks No. 2 in The Open Mat and No. 3 by Intermat and TrackWrestling at 149 pounds, while 125-pounder Nick Pinccinni is the consensus No. 4-ranked wrestler in his class. At 165 pounds, Travis Wittlake sits No. 8 by The Open Mat and No. 9 by Intermat, while 197-pounder Dakota Greer sits No. 8 by Track Wrestling and No. 10 in Intermat.
