MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team fell to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 37-9, on Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The Cowboys (6-1, 3-0 Big 12) won the first eight matches of the night, before the Mountaineers (3-7, 0-2 Big 12) won the final two, as redshirt sophomore Noah Adams (197) and senior Brandon Ngati (HWT) scored individual victories.
"Our guys fought hard tonight, and we closed it out with two good wins," WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "Noah took down an All-American in (Dakota) Geer and Brandon battled for his win."
Adams needed just 1:07 to earn an impressive pin over No. 11 Dakota Geer of OSU. The Coal City, West Virginia, native, who ranks No. 2 nationally in the 197-pound class in all major polls this week, improved his record to 23-0 on the season and 10-0 in dual meets.
The pin marked Adams' fifth of the campaign, a team high.
Ngati topped OSU's Cornelius Putnam, 3-1, thanks to a takedown at the 32-second mark of the first sudden victory period. The Gaithersburg, Maryland, native improved to 13-8 on the season with the win.
After allowing an escape point to begin the second period, Ngati registered an escape of his own to begin the third to tie the match at 1. Then, he nearly won the match in the closing seconds of regulation with a near-takedown, before he grabbed the winning two points in overtime.
Friday's match began with Oklahoma State earning a pair of tech-fall wins to take an early 10-0 lead. From there, sophomore Caleb Rea dropped a 7-2 decision to the Cowboys' Dusty Hone at 141 pounds.
Between two Cowboy pins at 149 and 184, OSU recorded a trio of major-decision wins over WVU redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck (12-0, 157) junior Nick Kiussis (12-3, 165) and freshman Scott Joll (11-3, 174). Joll earned a two-point reversal in the first period of his match against OSU's Andrew Shomers, tying the contest at 2-2. Then, he gave up a reversal to fall back into a 4-2 hole before eventually falling 11-3.
With the loss, West Virginia fell to 0-15 all-time against the Cowboys.
Next up, the Mountaineers conclude their two-match slate in the Sooner State by traveling to Oklahoma on Sunday, Jan. 19. The Big 12 dual at OU's McCasland Field House is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
