MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams extended his win streak to 22, as the West Virginia University wrestling team (3-6, 0-1 Big 12) dropped a 36-3 contest to No. 4 Virginia Tech (6-0, 0-0 ACC) on Saturday evening, held at the Cassell Coliseum, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
"We ran in to a very good team," second-year coach Tim Flynn said. "We have some work to do to get to that level. There are some weights that could have won tonight, but we just need to keep getting better."
Wrestling at 197 pounds, No. 4 Adams recorded the Mountaineers' lone victory of the evening. With the win, Adams improves to 22-0 on the year and 9-0 in dual action.
Adams notched a first-period takedown for the 2-1 advantage, but Stanley Smeltzer earned another escape in the second to tie the score at 2-2 heading into the final frame. Starting on bottom, Adams escaped and rode him through the period to put the score in his favor at 3-2. At the end of regulation, the riding time point was awarded to Adams, handing the Coal City, West Virginia, native the 4-2 decision.
Starting at 125 pounds, sophomore Joey Thomas dropped a hard-fought, 2-0 decision to No. 11-ranked Joey Prata. Sophomore Lucas Seibert then battled Collin Gerardi, dropping an 8-2 decision at 133 pounds, before West Virginia fell in back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.
Redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck suffered a 5-3 setback to No. 19 B.C. LaPrade at 157 pounds, which increased the Hokies' lead to 21-0 at the break.
Tech scored a pair of bonus victories down the stretch to secure the win, as senior Brandon Ngati capped the dual with a 2-1 loss to No. 20 John Borst in the heavyweight bout.
Despite the loss, West Virginia still holds a 12-11 advantage in the Black Diamond Brawl all-time.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will continue their road swing with a two-match trip through Oklahoma, as the squad heads to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to face perennial national contender Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 17, before taking on Oklahoma in Norman on Sunday, Jan. 19.
