"We have another tough road opponent in Ohio State, which is a well-coached team," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "They've had an incredible turnaround from a year ago. (Ohio State coach) Brian (Maisonneuve) is an old friend and a fantastic coach. He has the pedigree of winning National Championships from his time at Indiana. My expectation is that this team is starting to take the form of one that Brian has had his fingers on. I'm certain they aren't going to be very far away from competing for titles again at Ohio State."
Tuesday's match marks the 21st meeting between the Mountaineers and Buckeyes but the first since 2009. WVU leads the all-time series, 10-6-4.
The two squads played to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 21, 2009, in Columbus. Zach Johnson made six saves for West Virginia in the contest.
WVU (4-2-1) is coming off a 2-0 loss to Dayton on Sept. 21, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. The Mountaineers conceded goals in the 65th and 67th minute, respectively, and were unable to find the back of the net on 11 total shots. Freshman midfielder Luke McCormick led the team with four shots, while junior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky finished with three saves.
The setback was WVU's first regular-season home loss since Sept. 25, 2018, against Radford, and it snapped the team's four-match unbeaten streak.
West Virginia was slotted No. 29 in the latest College Soccer News National Top 30, which was released on Monday. Entering the match, the Mountaineers lead the Mid-American Conference in corner kicks, with 46, an average of 6.6 per match. Additionally, WVU sits No. 2 in the MAC and tied for No. 27 nationally in shots (107).
Senior Andres Muriel Albino leads the squad with three goals on the year, good for No. 2 in the MAC. The Sevilla, Spain, native also is tied for No. 5 in the league in points (7), while McCormick's three assists are tied for No. 2 in the league.
In goal, Tekesky continues to lead the MAC with two shutouts, and he sits No. 2 in the conference in goals against average (.960), save percentage (.750) and total saves (21).
Ohio State (5-2, 0-1 Big Ten) is led by second-year coach Brian Maisonneuve, who holds a record of 6-17-1 with the Buckeyes. OSU enters the match after falling to Penn State in its Big Ten Conference opener, 2-1, in overtime, on Sept. 21.
Redshirt sophomore forward Devyn Etling leads the Buckeyes with five goals and 20 shots on the year, while senior midfielder Jack Holland has tallied three assists. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Parker Siegfried has registered 18 saves this season.
The Buckeyes are one of just 11 Division-I opponents to play the Mountaineers at least 20 times in program history. They also are WVU's fourth opponent in the last six games to enter with a winning record.
