WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 23-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 15 Georgetown at Shaw Field on Sunday, Sept. 15.

WVU moves to 3-3-1 on the season with the loss, while Georgetown improved to 5-2-1. WVU leads the all-time series between the two schools 15-6-2. The loss marked the first time since 2009 that the Hoyas have defeated the Mountaineers at home.

"Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes today and it ended up costing us the game," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. ""Give all of the credit to Georgetown, they took advantage of our mistakes and fought hard throughout the match."

The Mountaineers and Hoyas battled through the first half with each team trading offensive attacks before Georgetown jumped out to the early lead on a goal by Jenna Royson in the 41st minute.

WVU registered five shots in the first half, while Georgetown tallied six. The Hoyas paced West Virginia in corner kicks, 3-2, in the opening half.

West Virginia fell behind 2-0 in the 62nd after Julia Leas headed a corner kick into the back of the net before Amanda Carolan broke through the Mountaineer backline and scored on a one-on-one opportunity in the 83rd minute to give the Hoyas a 3-0 win.

The Mountaineers and Hoyas each recorded six corner kicks each, while Georgetown outshot 13-12.

WVU returns to Morgantown this Friday, Sept. 20, for a 7 p.m. match against Fairleigh Dickinson. Friday's match has been designated as School Night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. All local elementary schools will be given complimentary tickets and WVU pencils. It is also Friday Night Happy Hour, with half-priced beverages available from 6-7 p.m.
