Manoah Collects Third Straight Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the third week in a row, West Virginia University junior right-handed starter Alek Manoah has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Manoah is the first pitcher in Big 12 history to be named Pitcher of the Week three consecutive weeks and the first Mountaineer to collect three or more conference weekly accolades in the same season since Jackson Cramer was named Player of the Week three times in 2016. Manoah is the 18th player in league history to earn Pitcher of the Week at least three times in a single season.

For the second consecutive start, Manoah struck out 15 batters in a complete-game shutout. In WVU's 1-0, walk-off win against Kansas on April 20, he once again did not walk a batter and allowed just three hits.

Also for the third consecutive week, Manoah was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week and is nominated for the Golden Spikes Award/D1Baseball.com Performance of the Week. One of four nominees, fans can vote for Manoah at @USAGoldenSpikes on Twitter, as he looks to collect the award for the third week in a row. Manoah also was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of The Week on Monday, the second straight week he has collected honors from the publication.

Against KU, Manoah matched his career high with 15 strikeouts, set a week before, as he became the first Mountaineer in program history to strike out 15 batters in a complete-game shutout in back-to-back weeks. He is the fourth player in WVU history with multiple 15-strikeout games in the same season, and the first since John Radosevich struck out 17 once and 16 twice in 1965.

As Manoah extended his shutout streak to 31.2 consecutive innings, he earned his team-leading sixth win of the season with his eighth quality start in 10 starts this year.

The Miami native struck out two batters in an inning four times and struck out three in the first. He had at least one strikeout in every inning and retired 12 in a row beginning in the second inning. He added four perfect 1-2-3 innings.

Manoah was the lone Big 12 pitcher to notch more than 10 strikeouts and the only one to not walk a batter in more than 5.1 innings pitched last week.

On the season, Manoah leads the Big 12 in nearly every statistical category. He is No. 6 nationally with 95 strikeouts, No. 7 with a 0.80 WHIP, No. 13 with two complete games and No. 19 with 5.30 hits allowed per nine innings. He also leads the Big 12 with a 1.81 ERA, six wins, 69.2 innings pitched, two shutouts and a .170 opponent batting average, while he is second with one home run allowed.

From April 8-9, Manoah was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and earned the Golden Spikes Award/D1Baseball.com Performance of the Week award after he struck out 11 batters in 8.0 shutout innings in a series-opening victory at No. 23 Oklahoma State on April 5.

The following week, in a complete-game shutout against No. 11 Texas Tech on April 12, Manoah struck out a career-high 15 batters and held the Big 12's highest-scoring offense to four hits with no walks in WVU's 2-0, series-opening victory. He was recognized as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and named the Golden Spikes Award/D1Baseball.com Performance of the Week award winner for the second consecutive week.

Manoah's performances have helped the Mountaineers to series wins each week, as West Virginia has won four consecutive weekend series and 10 of its last 13 games.

Up next, the Mountaineers host Penn State on April 23 before a weekend series at Texas from April 26-28. WVU hosts PSU on Tuesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. ET, at Monongalia County Ballpark. It is a Dollar Night, with tickets and select concession items available for just $1, and a Gold Rush. Tickets are available at WVUGAME.com, by calling 1-800-WVU GAME, at the Mountaineer Ticket Office at the WVU Coliseum or on game day at Monongalia County Ballpark.

West Virginia continues Big 12 play this weekend at Texas, in a series that begins on Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT. The series in Austin, Texas, continues on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. CT. The finale at Disch-Falk Field concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT.
