MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team claimed the series against Houston with a 7-3 victory at Kendrick Family Ballpark, Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers improve to 27-9 and 12-6 in the Big 12 while Houston falls to 17-21 and 4-14 in league play.
The Mountaineer pitchers did not allow a hit on Sunday until the eighth inning and finished the game with just two hits allowed. Sophomore Chansen Cole had five strikeouts in 5.0 scoreless innings followed by 1.2 hitless innings from senior Carson Estridge. Senior Ben McDougal also put up a hitless inning in relief.
At the plate, graduate student Brodie Kresser and senior Matthew Graveline each hit home runs. Junior Armani Guzman had two hits and scored two runs while graduate student Sean Smith had two hits and an RBI.
West Virginia took the lead in the first inning as junior Tyrus Hall and senior Paul Schoenfeld executed a first-and-third double steal, both the first of two stolen bases on the day for each player.
Guzman scored the next two runs, both on errors, scoring from second on a failed pickoff attempt in the second before scoring on an error by the Houston second baseman in the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Kresser smacked his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to push the WVU lead to 5-0. Graveline hit his fifth home run of the season, matching him with Smith and sophomore Gavin Kelly for most on the team, in the sixth inning before Smith had an RBI single to make it 7-0.
The Cougars scored three runs in the eighth, but graduate student Reese Bassinger closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth.
West Virginia will be back at Kendrick Family Ballpark on Tuesday evening for this season's lone edition of the Backyard Brawl. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
