Mountaineers, Wildcats to Meet on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team will host former BIG EAST foe Villanova in the second round of the 2019 Postseason WNIT on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the call for the Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. The game will air on Jack-FM 100.9, as well as various affiliates across the state, the TuneIn Radio app and WVUsports.com. A free live stream is available on WVUsports.com.
Tickets are $5 if purchased in advance at WVUGAME.com. At the WVU Coliseum ticket window on Thursday, tickets will be $7 dollars for adults, while youth tickets are $5. Carey's Crew members receive free admission courtesy of United Bank, while WVU students are also free. A valid student ID or Carey's Crew membership card must be shown to receive the free ticket. Fans are encouraged to bring a food donation that will benefit local Elementary School children who do not have sufficient food. Example donation items are oatmeal, cold cereals, pop tarts, granola bars, soup, ramen noodles, individual mac and cheese, goldfish, pretzels, Chex mix, popcorn in microwave bags, raisins and applesauce. All donations will be collected before tip-off Sunday at the Gold Gate at the Coliseum.
It will be the 30th all-time meeting for the former BIG EAST foes, who last met in the 2015 WNIT. It is the second time the two have squared off following WVU's departure from the league in 2012. The two previously met in the 2015 WNIT Quarterfinals with the Mountaineers claiming a 75-70 win in overtime. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 18-11; however, West Virginia boasts a 9-6 mark at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia comes into the contest at 21-10 overall after picking up an 83-43 win over Rider in the first round of the tournament on Thursday. At 40 points, WVU's win over the Broncs marked the largest margin of victory in a WNIT game in program history. The Mountaineers hauled in 61 rebounds against Rider, marking a season-high. It marks the first time since 2015 (Morehead State) that West Virginia has grabbed at least 61 team rebounds.
Senior forward Naomi Davenport and Tynice Martin tied for the team lead with 23 points apiece. Davenport also tied her career high with 15 rebounds, marking her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman forward Kari Niblack had a career-high 20 points, all of which came in the second half. The Leesburg, Florida, native also had 13 rebounds in picking up her fourth double-double of the season.
Villanova enters Sunday's matchup with a 19-12 overall record after picking up an 86-81 win over Old Dominion in the first round of the WNIT. The team went 9-9 in league play, falling to Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Wildcats are averaging 64.9 points per game and pulling in 32.4 rebounds per game and they're shooting 43.3 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from beyond the arc and 61.3 percent at the free-throw line.
Three players average in double-figure scoring, led by Mary Gedaka's 14.7 points per game. Gedaka also boasts a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game. Kelly Jakot is averaging 13.8 points per game, while Adrianna Hahn has put up 12.0 points per game. Hahn is also the team leader in assists with 104 on the season, as well as steals with 32. Bridget Herlihy leads the Wildcats with 40 blocks.
The winner of Sunday's matchup will advance to the third round to face the winner of the Toledo/Northwestern game.
