Courteau Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following four wins over Binghamton and Marshall, sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau of the West Virginia University tennis team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Courteau collected two singles wins, both in two sets, this weekend, defeating Binghamton's Maria Pandya, 6-4, 6-0, from the No. 3 slot on Saturday. On Sunday, the sophomore defeated Marshall's Madi Ballow, 6-2, 6-3, from the No. 4 slot to earn her ninth singles win, a career high.
In doubles, the Quebec, Canada, native paired with fellow sophomore Giovanna Caputo to defeat Binghamton's Tiffany Dunn and Samara Eisenber, 6-3. Against Marshall, Courteau partnered with senior Abigail Rosiello to beat Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych, 6-3.
Courteau (16-5) leads the Mountaineers with nine singles wins and seven doubles wins. Her 16 total wins also lead the team.

Last Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers (13-0, 8-0 GARC) finished second at the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships, held March 8-9 at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Coliseum … WVU finished second in smallbore on Friday, shooting 2331, the best mark of the day … TCU, the eventual 2019 National Champion, won the smallbore tiebreaker with a 127-112 edge in center shots … the Mountaineers placed third in air rifle with a 2361 total on Saturday and second overall with a 4692 mark … sophomore David Koenders finished a team-best third in smallbore with a 444.8 total in the final … junior Milica Babic placed fifth in air rifle with a 183.5 final score.

This Week in Baseball: West Virginia returns to the road for five games this week during WVU's spring break … the week begins with a pair of games at Morehead State, on March 12 and 13, both at 3 p.m. ET … the week concludes with a weekend series at William & Mary, from March 15-17 … first pitch on Friday is at 6 p.m. ET, followed by a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday and a 1 p.m. finale on Sunday.
Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia swept Kent State last week, with 6-2 and 8-4 victories on March 9, followed by a 9-7 win in Sunday's finale … Alek Manoah struck out 12 and the offense scored six in the final three innings in Saturday's opener … Manoah struck out the side in the sixth and seventh innings, part of a stretch where he struck out nine of 10 batters, and allowed two runs on five hits in 7.2 innings … WVU was held hitless into the sixth inning until a two-tun triple by Darius Hill … Hill and Brandon White each had two RBIs, while Paul McIntosh had a career-best two hits, an RBI and scored two runs … the Mountaineers rallied to complete the doubleheader sweep, thanks to a five-run sixth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit followed by three insurance runs in the eighth … McIntosh had two hits and three RBIs, both career-highs, and hit his second home run in three days, a go-ahead, three-run shot in the sixth inning … Gabe Kurtzhals earned the win and held Kent State hitless with a strikeout and a walk in 2.0 innings, and he was one of three freshmen to pitch in Saturday's second contest, a trio that combined to allow two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings … as the lead changed four times, WVU completed the series sweep on Sunday thanks to runs in five consecutive innings … a five-run sixth capped the scoring and was highlighted by a three-run home run by Kevin Brophy, while Tyler Doanes homered in the third inning … the West Virginia offense scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, taking a 2-0 lead after three and regaining a 4-3 advantage in the fifth … after Kent State scored two in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, the Mountaineers answered with five in the bottom half to go up 9-5. KSU scored two in the top of the seventh, but could not get any closer.
Notes: West Virginia is 9-5 on the season, 5-0 at home, and has won four in a row … The three-game sweep of Kent State is WVU's first since the Mountaineers won all three games in 2017 at Western Kentucky, from March 2-4 … Manoah's 12 strikeouts in a 6-2 series-opening win are the second-most in his career, behind 13 to open the 2019 season, and the most in the Big 12 this week … Manoah improved to 2-1 with the win … McIntosh had a career-best two hits in both games of Saturday's doubleheader and added a career-high three RBIs with his second home run in three games in the nightcap … Kurtzhals collected his first win and Zach Reid earned his first save in Saturday's nightcap … Doanes had a career-high-tying three hits and a season-best three RBIs in Sunday's finale, and hit his second career home run and first of the year in the third inning … Brophy had two hits and five RBIs, both season-high totals, and hit his second homer of the season and eighth of his career in the sixth inning … Ryan Bergert earned his first career win and Sam Kessler earned his third save of the season to complete the sweep.
