
North Carolina Up Next for West Virginia

OMAHA, Neb. – The West Virginia University baseball team continues its stay in the College World Series with a matchup against No. 5 North Carolina, Sunday night at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
The loser of the game will play the winner of the elimination game between Troy and Ole Miss on Tuesday at 2 p.m. while the winner will advance to Wednesday's game at 2 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday's contest.
The game between West Virginia and North Carolina will air on ESPN with Karl Ravech, Kyle Peterson, Chris Burke, and Kris Budden on the call. It can also be heard on the Mountaineers Sports Network with Andrew Caridi and Jake Weghorst on all radio affiliates as well as the Varsity Network, WVU Gameday App, and WVUSports.com.
The Mountaineers are 46-15 overall record after defeating Troy, 7-5, in the opening game in Omaha. It is the first CWS appearance in program history, finally breaking through after falling just short in Super Regionals in 2024 and 2025.
Redshirt junior Maxx Yehl was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year while fellow pitchers – sophomore Chansen Cole and graduate student Ian Korn – joined Yehl on the All-Big 12 First Team alongside sophomore catcher Gavin Kelly. Senior outfielder Paul Schoenfeld earned a spot on the second team while graduate student Reese Bassinger, senior Carson Estridge, junior Armani Guzman, sophomore Matt Ineich, and graduate student Sean Smith earned honorable mention status.
Yehl (Perfect Game, NCBWA, ABCA, Baseball America), Kelly (Perfect Game, NCBWA, Baseball America), and Cole (NCBWA) were all recently named All-Americans with Yehl landing on the first team by Perfect Game.
Kelly leads the team with a .377 batting average, 17 home runs, 21 doubles, 57 RBI, and 66 runs scored. Guzman is tops in the Big 12 with 39 stolen bases, the most in a single season in program history, breaking current St. Louis Cardinal Victor Scott II's record in the opener against Troy with a steal of home.
On the mound, Yehl leads the Big 12 with a 2.10 ERA while striking out 105 batters in 90.0 innings. Cole has a 3.14 ERA while going 10-1 and collecting 108 strikeouts in 97.1 innings. Korn has a 2.95 ERA and leads the Big 12 with a 1.03 WHIP.
North Carolina advanced to Sunday evening's game with a 6-2 win over Ole Miss in the opener. Overall, the Tar Heels 51-12-1 this season and the No. 5 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
