
WVU Finishes Road Slate at Kansas

Lawrence, Kan. — Looking to regain momentum after back-to-back setbacks, the West Virginia University will finish out its road schedule on Saturday in Lawrence, Kansas, when the Mountaineers take on Kansas in an 8 p.m. ET tip at Allen Fieldhouse.
Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will call the game for the Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. The game can be found on Jack-FM 100.9 as well as affiliates across the state, the TuneIn Radio App and WVUSports.com. The contest can be viewed on ESPN+.
WVU (19-6, 10-6) and KU (12-17, 2-14) meet for the second time this season and 16th time overall on Saturday. West Virginia claimed a 71-50 win over KU on Feb. 3 at the WVU Coliseum. Redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin had 22 points, going 9-of-10 at the free-throw line to lead the scoring. Senior forward Naomi Davenport added 16 points, while junior guard Lucky Rudd had 13 along with six rebounds. West Virginia finished the game shooting 46.8 percent from the field and just over 74 percent at the free-throw line.
The Mountaineers enter the game with an 11-4 series lead and 5-2 in Allen Fieldhouse. Additionally, they're are 11-2 against the Jayhawks in Big 12 play. The two first met in December 1992, with Kansas taking a 106-64 victory. A second nonconference meeting followed in January 1994 with the Mountaineers falling 84-64 at the WVU Coliseum. To date, West Virginia has won 10 straight over Kansas and has won 13 of the last 14 contests.
West Virginia is coming off a 90-79 loss at Kansas State on Wednesday. Martin had a game-high 27 points, tying her season high previously set at Texas (Jan. 28), marking her fourth straight 20-point game. For just the second time this season, the Mountaineers did not post a block in the contest. They previously went without a block on Jan. 20 at Baylor.
Davenport finished with 19 points on the night, becoming the program's 36th 1,000-point scorer. She is just the second junior college transfer in program history to achieve the feat, as J.D. Drummonds hit 1,000 points in her second season in Morgantown in 1981. Davenport is the second Mountaineer to reach the milestone this season, as senior guard Katrina Pardee did so on Dec. 2 against Mizzou. Davenport and Pardee join Martin to total three 1,000-point scorers on this season's roster.
Kansas comes into Saturday's contests with a 12-17 overall record and a 2-14 mark in league play. KU has lost seven straight in Big 12 play, including an overtime game against in-state rival K-State on Feb. 6 (72-62). The last win came on Jan. 30 against Oklahoma by a score of 88-79. The Jayhawks enter the game averaging 65.1 points and 34.8 rebounds per game and are shooting 39.0 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from beyond the arc and 68.9 percent from the charity stripe.
Four Jayhawks score in double figures, led by Jessica Washington's 13.9 points per game. However, Washington has not played since Feb. 13 against Oklahoma. Kylee Kopatich boasts a team-best 50 steals and also averages 11.6 points per game. Bailey Helgren leads the rebounding at 5.7 board per game, while Austin Richardson averages 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
