February 15, 2019 05:34 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a thrilling victory at Texas Tech earlier this week, the West Virginia University women's basketball team returns to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday to host TCU in the Mountaineers' annual Pink Game in honor of breast cancer awareness, presented by WVU Medicine. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
Ron Thulin and Brenda VanLengen will have the call for AT&T SportsNet and FS1 while Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the radio call on the Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. Fans in the Morgantown and Fairmont areas can catch the game on The Ticket: 95.7 FM/920 AM, as well as the WVU Gameday App and WVUsports.com.
Admission is free courtesy of WVU Medicine. Fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink and will receive free pink shakers while supplies last. The WVU Cancer Institute will be selling the official WVU athletics "pink" shirt for donations of $10 or more and will also be selling chuck-a-ducks. Additionally, 10 previous game-worn pink jerseys will be part of a silent auction that will close at halftime.
The Mountaineers (17-6, 8-4) and the Horned Frogs meet for the 17th time overall and the 15th time as league foes in 2019. It is the second meeting of the season between the Big 12 foes as the two kicked off conference play on Jan. 2 in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs came away with a 62-48 victory over the Mountaineers as WVU started league play at 0-1. Senior forward Naomi Davenport just missed a double-double, finishing with 22 points and nine rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin, in her first Big 12 game since March of 2017, added 10 points. WVU finished shooting 32.1 percent from the field with five 3-pointers.
"I hope a lot has changed (since that game)," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "I was watching that film the other day and we didn't play well. It was our first conference game and we did not play well at all. Give them credit. They have a great team. They're coming off a win at Iowa State – a big win for them. They're playing very well right now, so we'll have our hands full."
The series dates back to Dec. 9, 1989, when West Virginia earned a 73-61 neutral-site win over TCU.
WVU and TCU first met in league play on Jan. 15, 2013, at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers topped the Horned Frogs, 58-50.
Both teams have rebounded from a loss with a win in recent weeks as WVU rebounded from a defeat at No. 22 Iowa State to claim a 75-72 win at Texas Tech, while TCU bounced back from a loss at Baylor with a 76-69 upset of No. 19 Iowa State. The Mountaineers pulled out their closest conference win on Wednesday evening in Lubbock.
Freshman Madisen Smith had a team-best 20 points to lead the way, marking her second straight 20-point performance. Smith is the first WVU freshman since Kate Bulger in 2000 to drop at least 20 points in consecutive games. Sophomore guard Nia Staples had a career effort in the win, going 4-for-4 for a career-high 11 points in 16 minutes of action, while Davenport added 18 points, scoring in double figures for the ninth straight game.
TCU enters Saturday's contest at 18-6 overall and 8-5 in league play. Most recently, the team earned a 76-69 upset win over Iowa State on Wednesday in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs average 69.0 points and 37.6 rebounds per contest and are shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 31.0 percent from beyond the arc and 63.0 percent at the free-throw line.
Jordan Moore leads three players in double figures, averaging 15.6 points per game. She also boasts a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game and 55 blocks. Amy Okonkwo averages 13.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Kianna Ray is at 10.6 points per game with 43 steals and 94 assists on her resume as well.
West Virginia hits the road next week for a midweek game at Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
