December 07, 2019 12:36 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team travels to Starkville, Mississippi, on Sunday, Dec. 8, to square off with No. 10/8 Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum, with opening tip scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will call the game for the Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. The game can be found on Jack-FM 100.9 as well as affiliates across the state, the TuneIn Radio App and WVUSports.com. Sunday's contest against the Bulldogs will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
"They're a great team, they play extremely hard," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "They look to create a lot of turnovers. They dribble-drive. They're a complete team. They have inside, outside players, and it's going to be a great game. I'm looking forward to playing the game, seeing where we're at and going from there."
Sunday's matchup up with Mississippi State is a part of the 2019 Big/SEC Challenge, which began with two games Wednesday, Dec. 4, and concludes Sunday with three contests. In the sixth edition of the Big 12/SEC Challenge, all 10 teams from the Big 12 Conference are set to square off against 10 squads from the SEC. This year marks the fourth season in which 10 games will be played and this year's challenge includes six games that will feature at least one ranked opponent in either the Associated Press or USA Today Coaches' Poll.
The Mountaineers (5-1) and the Bulldogs (8-1) meet for the second time in the series on Sunday, with both contests coming in Starkville. The last time WVU squared off against Mississippi State was on Nov. 20, 2014. West Virginia suffered the loss in the first meeting, as Mississippi State claimed the 74-61 victory.
West Virginia is coming off a trip to the 2019 Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Resort Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico. The Mountaineers split a pair of contests in Cancun, falling to Creighton, 82-75, in Thursday's contest and defeating New Mexico, 73-60, on Friday. Redshirt junior guard Kysre Gondrezick averaged 14.5 points per game at the Cancun Challenge, scoring 12 against Creighton and 17 against New Mexico, and was named to the 2019 Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team (Riviera Division). Gondrezick led WVU in scoring against New Mexico, while redshirt senior guard Tynice Martin led the Mountaineers in scoring against Creighton, with 19 points.
