Mountaineers Ring in New Year at Southern Scuffle

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team will ring in the new year with a return to the mat, as the Mountaineers travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to compete in the 2020 Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena on Jan. 1-2. Each day, action will start each morning at 9 a.m.
"The Southern Scuffle is one of the premiere tournaments in the country," second-year coach Tim Flynn said. "Our guys will get an opportunity to compete against some of the best wrestlers in the country over the next two days and will get a feel for where they stand nationally."
The tournament is hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and will be broadcast live on Flo Wrestling. Live stats throughout the tournament can be found at Trackwrestling. West Virginia will be one of 28 teams competing at this year's Southern Scuffle. Representatives from eight teams ranked in the NWCA Coaches Poll highlight the field. No. 5 Virginia Tech leads the way, while No. 6 NC State, No. 9 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Pitt are Top-10 programs competing this weekend. No. 11 Iowa State, No. 17 North Carolina, T-No. 25 Rider and T-No. 25 Stanford will also compete this weekend. WVU, ISU and OSU will be joined by Big 12 foes Air Force and Northern Colorado.
Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams earned a preseed ahead of the Southern Scuffle, as he enters the event as the No. 4 seed at 197. Adams has captured a pair of tournament titles this season after winning the Southeast Open on Nov. 3 and the Mountaineer Invitational on Nov. 9.
Adams enters the tournament riding a 16-match win streak tallying three wins at the Mountaineer Quad on Dec. 22. For his performance, he became the first Mountaineer to be named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week this season.
The Coal City, West Virginia, native is ranked No. 9 by Open Mat in the 197-pound division and sits at No. 13 and No. 14 by Intermat and TrackWrestling, respectively. Adams leads the squad with two wins via technical falls and is tied with redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck for the team lead with four major decisions this season.
Junior Nick Kiussis and senior Brandon Ngati also earned rankings in the FloWrestling polls this week, sitting at No. 22 and No. 24, respectively.
WVU enters the tournament after going 3-0 at the Mountaineer Quad on Dec. 22 at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. WVU topped VMI, 34-8, before earning its first sweep since Jan. 3, 2015, in a 38-0 win over Hofstra. The Mountaineers capped the day with a 22-9 win over Edinboro. West Virginia moved to 3-5 (0-1 Big 12) as a result.
Adams, Seth Hogue, Hornfeck, No. -/24/- Nick Kiussis, Jackson Moomau and Joey Thomas went 3-0 on the day. Adams, Hogue and Thomas each earned a pin as the Mountaineers tallied 16 total decision victories, three major decisions and a pair of technical falls.
