WVU to Host Mountaineer Quad Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team returns to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 22, as it hosts Edinboro, Hofstra and VMI in the third-ever Mountaineer Quad.
The first duals are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. with WVU taking on VMI. The Mountaineers will then face Hofstra following a five-minute intermission, before closing the day against Edinboro.
"A quad is a unique format because each guy gets three matches, which simulates a tournament," second-year coach Tim Flynn said. "We have three teams coming in that vary in age and experience and I think we can compete with these teams. For a team like ours that's so inexperienced and young it's exciting to compete against multiple teams that we know if we compete at our best, we can get a win."

The Mountaineers will host a free youth clinic prior to the event, open to any and all entrants in eighth grade and below. The clinic will take place from 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. To pre-register, email noah.smith3@mail.wvu.edu. Additionally, the first 250 youth fans in attendance will receive a free WVU wrestling mask. Autographs also will take place following the match.
Fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. All tickets are general admission.
WVU hosted the first Mountaineer Quad in 2015, going 3-0 against Drexel, Campbell and Arizona State, before going 0-2 in the 2016 edition of the event.
West Virginia has a combined record of 28-39-2 against its opponents in the Mountaineer Quad. The Mountaineers are 11-22-2 against Edinboro, 0-2 against Hofstra and hold a 17-5 series advantage over VMI.
Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams enters Sunday riding a 13-match win streak earning a 10-3 decision over Ohio's Jake Walker on Friday. The Coal City, West Virginia, native is ranked No. 11 by Intermat in the 197-pound division and sits at No. 14 and No. 19 by TrackWrestling and Open Mat, respectively. Adams leads the squad with two wins via technical falls and is tied with redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck for the team lead with four major decisions this season.
Junior Nick Kiussis and senior Brandon Ngati also earned rankings in the TrackWrestling polls this week, sitting at No. 24 and No. 33, respectively.
West Virginia is 0-5 this season after falling to Ohio, 20-13, on Friday night at Parkersburg Memorial Fieldhouse in Parkersburg, W.Va. Adams (197), senior Brandon Ngati (HWT), Kiussis (165) and Joey Thomas (125) picked up wins in the contest for the Mountaineers.
