WVU Stumbles in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – Redshirt Sophomore Noah Adams extended his winning streak to 13 matches as the West Virginia University wrestling team fell to Ohio, 20-13, at Parkersburg Memorial Fieldhouse in Parkersburg, West Virginia on Friday.
A crowd of 1,310 attended the bout at Parkersburg High, which marked the 55th meeting between the schools in a series that began in 1922. West Virginia now holds a 36-19-1 advantage in the series between the two schools despite the setback.
WVU fell to 0-5 (0-1 Big 12) on the year with the loss, while Ohio moved to 2-3.
"Three close matches and that was it," coach Tim Flynn said. "We have to win one of those. We had our chances, but we are getting better. We really need to focus on Sunday, we need to break through with a win."
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early,3-0, lead for the second straight match after redshirt sophomore Joey Thomas earned a 4-2 decision over Ohio's Giovanni DiSabato at 125. Thomas used a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second period and earned a riding time point in the third in the win.
The Mountaineers dropped four straight bouts as the Bobcats took a 13-3 lead before junior Nick Kiussis cut the lead with a 9-1 major decision over Joe Terry. Kiussis registered a takedown in the first period and scored a reversal in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the third. Starting in the neutral position, Kiussis recorded two takedowns and earned a riding point to secure the major decision.
At 174, freshman Scott Joll and OU's Logan Stanley combined for 30 points, with Stanley winning the back-and-forth bout, 17-13. The grapplers registered six combined takedowns, the most of any match involving a WVU wrestler in a dual this season. Ohio extended its lead to 20-7 after WVU's Jackson Moomau fell in a major decision at 184.
The Mountaineers closed the match strong as Adams and senior Brandon Ngati each extended their win streaks with a decision at 197 and 285, respectively.
Adams earned his 13th-straight victory with a 6-4 win over OU's Jake Walker. Adams struck first with a takedown before Walker earned a reversal to tie the match at two heading into the second period.
Walker took the lead in the second period after earning an escape, before Adams regained the lead after earning a takedown. After choosing to start the third period from the bottom, Adams recorded a reversal to take a 6-3 lead. With less than a minute remaining, Adams allowed an escape and narrowly avoided a takedown from Walker in the closing seconds to earn the win.
Ngati stretched his winning streak to three with a hard-fought 2-0 decision over Ohio's Jordan Earnest. With the match scoreless heading into the third, Ngati chose to start on the bottom. The decision paid off as he was able to escape from Earnest's control to score the contest's lone point in regulation as Ngati was also given an additional point for riding time.
West Virginia returns to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 22, as it hosts Edinboro, Hofstra and VMI at the Mountaineer Quad. The first duals are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. with WVU taking on VMI. The Mountaineers will then face Hofstra, before closing the day against Edinboro.
