MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team will compete in its first dual match of the 2019-20 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 16, as the squad faces Big 12-foe Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. The bout is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET at Bank of Colorado Arena.
Saturday's match will be live-streamed on FloWrestling.com.
"It's always exciting to wrestle another conference opponent to see where we stand in the Big 12," second-year coach Tim Flynn said. "They are a much better team this year so it's going to be a difficult match. They present a lot of challenges."
The match marks the second consecutive season the Mountaineers and Bears have faced each other in the dual-match opener, as WVU topped UNC, 22-14, in Morgantown last season.
Saturday's meeting marks the second time the Mountaineers will travel to Greeley, Colorado, after WVU topped UNC 24-16 in 2017. WVU holds a 4-0 advantage over the Bears in the series.
Two Mountaineers, junior Nick Kiussis and redshirt sophomore Noah Adams, enter the match with rankings by Open Mat and Intermat. Kiussis is ranked No. 18 by Intermat and No. 19 by Open Mat at 165 pounds, while Adams sits at No. 11 and 15 by Intermat and Open Mat, respectively.
Adams leads WVU heading into match play with an 8-0 record on the year. Adams captured back-to-back tournament titles to open the season at the Southeast Open and the Mountaineer Invitational on Nov. 3 and Nov. 9, respectively. Sophomore Caleb Rea is second on the squad with an 8-1, and freshman Scott Joll ranks third with a 7-2 clip.
The Bears are led by 149-pounder Andrew Alirez, who captured the title at the Northern Colorado Open on Nov. 10. Alirez boasts four national rankings: No. 13 by Trackwrestling.com, No. 17 by Intermat.com, No. 20 by The Open Mat.com and No. 24 by FloWrestling.com.
UNC finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 4-10 (0-8 Big 12) record and saw three wrestlers earn bids in the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
