"We're really looking forward to this Big 12 battle," first-year coach Tim Flynn said. "Oklahoma has always been a wrestling powerhouse, and I think we'll see some good competition amongst each weight class. I'm also looking forward to seeing my good friend Lou [Oklahoma's head coach and a former Edinboro wrestler] and competing head-to-head with him again."
West Virginia (2-7, 2-1 Big 12) and Oklahoma (1-1, 0-1 Big 12) will meet for the 10th time on Friday, as the Sooners boast a 7-2 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1986. However, it was West Virginia who claimed the last meeting, as the Mountaineers picked up a 24-12 win in Morgantown on Jan. 4, 2018. The Sooners have won seven straight matches prior to last year's meeting.
In its last weekend of competition, West Virginia went 1-3 at the South Beach Duals, including a win over No. 20 North Dakota State on Dec. 30. West Virginia opened the two-day event with matches against Virginia and Michigan State, suffering a 26-13 setback to the Cavaliers and dropping a 23-16 match to the Spartans. The following day, West Virginia picked up a 19-17 victory over No. 20 North Dakota State before dropping a 23-20 match to No. 13 Purdue. Redshirt senior Christian Monserrat, redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt and sophomore Nick Kiussis each posted a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend.
Schmitt returned to the mat for the first time since Nov. 4 last weekend, as he improved to 10-0 on the season at 133 pounds. The Platte City, Missouri, native appears at No. 14 in this week's Open Mat rankings. He also checks in at No. 18 by FloWrestling. At 149 pounds, Monserrat remains undefeated in dual action with a 9-0 mark. He also leads the team with 29 match points on the year.
The Sooners have not competed since mid-December, winning a 20-12 match at Appalachian State on Dec. 16. Dom Demas is the only Sooner to appear in the most recent Intermat rankings, checking in at No. 8 in the 141-pound weight class. He rose eight spots from his previous mark of No. 16 after upsetting No. 6 Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State in a 7-6 decision on Dec. 9. He also is tabbed at No. 8 by FloWrestling and No. 9 by The Open Mat.
Of note, Oklahoma's head coach Lou Rosselli was a two-time All-American (1991 and 1993) at Edinboro with Flynn on staff as an assistant (1992-97). Rosselli earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Year honors his senior year (1993) after winning titles in both conferences at 118 pounds. Flynn took over Edinboro's head coaching duties in 1997, with Rosselli serving as the volunteer assistant for three years before being promoted to assistant coach for eight seasons.
Following its match in Oklahoma, West Virginia will head to Raleigh, North Carolina, for a 1 p.m. dual against the Wolfpack on Sunday, Jan. 13. NC State, which finished fifth at the 2018 NCAA Tournament, holds a slim 3-2 advantage in the all-time series.
