January 27, 2019 07:46 PM | Women's Basketball
AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 27, 2018) – Following a dominating win over Kansas State on Saturday, the West Virginia University women's basketball team travels to Austin, Texas, for a rematch with No. 12 Texas on Monday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET from the Frank Erwin Center and will air on FS1.
Ron Thulin and Dan Hughes will have the television call on FS1 and FOX Sports Go. Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the radio call on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG on Jack-FM 100.9, as well as various affiliates across the state, WVUsports.com and the TuneIn Radio app.
West Virginia and No. 12-ranked Texas meet for the second time this season and 19th time overall on Monday in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns own a 12-6 mark overall and have an 11-6 lead in Big 12 play. The two have met just once outside of Big 12 play – ironically, they squared off in the 2012 NCAA Tournament the season before WVU joined the Big 12.
The Frank Erwin Center is the one Big 12 arena in which the Mountaineers have never beaten the home team.
WVU and UT last met on Jan. 6, 2019, at the WVU Coliseum. Though the Mountaineers led 24-22 at the half, they couldn't hold on and fell to the No. 12 ranked Longhorns, 70-58 in Morgantown. Senior forward Naomi Davenport led the way with 26 points, going 10-for-17 from the field with seven rebounds.
WVU brings a 14-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in Big 12 play into the meeting, which is the Mountaineers' fifth game against a top-25 opponent this season. The Mountaineers are coming off a 60-30 win over Kansas State at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday. It marked the team's fourth straight win at the Coliseum and was WVU's 10th victory of the season at home.
The Mountaineers allowed just 30 points from the Wildcats- the fewest allowed in a Big 12 game in program history and the fewest allowed by in a Power 5 conference game this season. It was just the second time since 2006 WVU has held an opponent to 30 or fewer points.
While battling the flu, Davenport recorded her 11th career double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the way. It was WVU's 12th double-double of the season. Davenport boasts a team-high five double-doubles on the year, followed by redshirt junior Tynice Martin (3), freshman forward Kari Niblack (3) and senior center Theresa Ekhelar (1).
Martin had 13 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, while redshirt junior Lucky Rudd had 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds in the win.
No. 12 Texas enters Monday's matchup with a 17-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in Big 12 play.
Following a loss to K-State on Jan. 16, UT has won three straight and is coming off a 78-71 win at Texas Tech on Saturday. The Longhorns are averaging 73.2 points and 43.4 rebounds per game.
shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from downtown and 68.8 percent at the charity stripe.
Despite the absence of leading scorer Lashann Higgs (13.8 ppg), four Longhorns are averaging in double-figure scoring. Sug Sutton leads the way with 12.6 points per game and has a team-best 113 assists and 28 steals on her resume. Danni Williams (10.7 ppg), Jatarie White (10.6 ppg) and Joyner Holmes (10.4 ppg) also average in double digits. Holmes, who missed eight games due to injury, is averaging a team-best 6.7 rebounds per game.
Next up, the Mountaineers will host Kansas on Feb. 3 in a 3 p.m. tip at the WVU Coliseum
