MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Riding a two-match win streak, the West Virginia University wrestling team treks to Laramie, Wyoming, to take on No. 11 Wyoming on Sunday in a 4 p.m. ET dual at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Sunday's Big 12 Conference match will be broadcasted live on FloWrestling.com. Live stats will be provided on TrackWrestling.com. Direct links to the video stream and live stats can be found on the wrestling schedule page on WVUsports.com.
"Wyoming has a pretty good team," said first-year coach Tim Flynn. "They have a number of ranked guys. We look at a little bit of scouting to make sure we know what is going on, but we just try to focus on our guys."
West Virginia has faced nine teams ranked inside the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Top-25 Poll this season, and Wyoming is WVU's seventh opponent ranked in the top 15.
Sunday's match marks the Mountaineers (4-11, 3-4 Big 12) and the Cowboys (11-3, 2-1 Big 12) first-ever meeting as league foes. The Big 12 added Wyoming as an affiliate member during the 2015-16 academic year. The two squads met once as nonconference opponents back in 2009, with Wyoming claiming the 19-18 victory at a neutral site.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 2-0 showing in Orem, Utah, on Friday. West Virginia picked up a 21-16 neutral-site victory over CSU Bakersfield and claimed a 26-13 win over Big 12 foe Utah Valley. Redshirt senior Christian Monserrat (149), redshirt junior Zachary Moore (157), sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) and redshirt freshmen Joey Thomas (125) and Noah Adams (197) each posted a 2-0 record on the evening.
Wyoming has won eight of its last nine duals, most recently winning a 33-3 contest over Big 12 foe Air Force on Jan. 18, at the UniWyo Sports Complex. The Cowboys won nine out of 10 bouts against the Falcons, with four of their victories coming with bonus points.
Of note, Wyoming has not lost a match since Dec. 29, when the squad fell to then-No. 6 Cornell, 23-9, at the South Beach Duals, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Individually, the Cowboys have five wrestlers nationally ranked by Intermat in Sunday's probable lineup. 165-pounder Branson Ashworth is the squad's highest-ranked Cowboy at No. 9, followed by 133-pounder Montorie Bridges at No. 11 and 141-pounder Sam Turner at No. 18. Additionally, Cole Verner (125) and Tate Samuelson (184) each check in at No. 20 in their respective weight classes.
The most anticipated match of the weekend will be Kiussis and Ashworth at 165 pounds. Kiussis, who is ranked at No. 19 by Intermat, has won nine of his last 10 duals for a team-leading 18 wins on the year and has topped a trio of ranked opponents in the process (No. 18 Cam Coy of Virginia, No. 17 Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State and No. 19 Andrew Shomers of Oklahoma State). Ashworth, who is in his final season as a Cowboy, has won 10 consecutive matches. He is 24-3 on the year and holds a perfect 14-0 record in dual action. Fifteen of Ashworth's 24 wins have come with bonus points. Kiussis competed as a true freshman last season, going 7-6 in dual action. This season, he is 11-4 in duals.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will wrap up its home slate on Friday, Feb. 1, with a nonconference match against Army at 8 p.m. ET. The Mountaineers and the Black Knights meet for just the third time overall, with the all-time series knotted at one win apiece.
It is Senior Day, and WVU will celebrate the careers of Joe Wheeling and Monserrat following the match. It's also Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and fans will have an opportunity to receive the Mountaineers' autographs one last time following the match.
