West Virginia and Texas Tech square off for the first time this season and the 14th time overall on Wednesday at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers, who moved to 12-5 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 play, are coming off a 79-47 loss at No. 2/3 Baylor on Sunday. WVU shot just 30.9 percent from the field – its second-lowest percentage of the season in the loss. The team did not record a block at Baylor, marking the first time the Mountaineers have not blocked at least one shot since March 18, 2018, vs. St Joseph's in the Postseason WNIT.
Redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin led the scoring with 18 points, hitting four of the team's six 3-pointers. WVU has made a 3-pointer in 436 straight games, dating back to the 2005-06 season.
Senior forward Naomi Davenport added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds while freshman guard Madisen Smith had 11 points in the loss, playing her first career 40-minute effort. Smith scored in double figures for the first time in Big 12 play and the fourth time this season.
Texas Tech enters Wednesday's game with a 10-7 overall record and a 1-5 mark in league play under first-year head coach Marlene Stollings. The team's lone Big 12 win thus far came on Jan. 9 against Kansas by a score of 69-66. The Red Raiders are averaging 73.8 points and 47.2 rebounds per game and they're shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from beyond the arc and 61.1 percent at the free-throw line.
"They're much improved this year," coach Mike Carey said. "All of their (Big 12) games have been close. They have some good young freshman that are playing. They have some veterans that returned. (Stollings) has done a very good job in her first year in there, getting them to play hard and getting a lot of excitement in their program."
Freshman guard Chrislyn Carr leads the scoring at 19.5 points per game with a team-best 47 3-pointers. Junior forward Brittany Brewer also averages in double-figuring scoring at 17.8 points per game and boasts 10.2 boards per game. She also has a team-high 41 blocks this season. Senior forward Zuri Sanders leads the effort on the glass with 12.2 rebounds per game.
