Mountaineers Host UNLV With Altered Schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team hosts UNLV this weekend, with an altered schedule due to inclement weather expected in the Morgantown area.
The series now begins with a doubleheader on Friday, April 6, with first pitch of game one set for noon ET. Game two will follow approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. The series finale will take place on Sunday, April 8, at noon.

Tickets are available for Friday and Sunday at WVUGAME.com, by calling 1-800-WVU GAME, at the Mountaineer Ticket Office at the WVU Coliseum or on game day at Monongalia County Ballpark. One ticket will be good for both games on Friday, and fans with tickets to Saturday's originally-scheduled contest can exchange them for tickets to Friday's doubleheader or for another WVU home game this season. Additionally, fans who purchased the football spring game/baseball combo pack will have both their football and baseball tickets automatically refunded.
Fans can play Baseball Bingo during Friday's first game. Sunday is the first Kids Day of the year, which features a new Kids Zone Presented By WVU Medicine Children's with inflatables and Mr. Twister's Balloon Art and Face Painting. Additionally, kids can run the bases after the game.

The Mountaineers (11-14) are coming off a 9-6 win over Niagara on Tuesday. It was the first of 15 games at home for WVU over the course of the next 18 games. West Virginia enters the weekend ranked No. 25 in the RPI, while the Big 12 is the No. 2 RPI conference in the country. The Mountaineers are one of five league teams ranked in the top 50 and one of two in the top 25.
The Mountaineers rank among the NCAA and Big 12 leaders in several statistical categories. West Virginia is No. 2 in the Big 12 with 25 home runs, while WVU's two shutouts is third-best in the league.
Individually, Darius Hill continue to pace the Big 12 with 0.50 doubles per game and is No. 7 in the country and first in the Big 12 with an average of 21.2 at-bats per strikeout. Hill also sits No. 25 nationally with 11 doubles. On the mound, Alek Manoah has made seven starts, tied for No. 2 in the league and No. 16 nationally.
The Rebels (22-9) come to Morgantown ranked No. 26 in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll. They also are No. 28 in the RPI. UNLV has lost two in a row and six of its last eight, and this weekend caps a season-long nine-game roadtrip.

SCOUTING UNLV
UNLV is 22-9 on the season and 7-5 in Mountain West play. The Rebels are 15-3 at home and 7-6 on the road. They are coming off a pair of midweek losses at Grand Canyon, 5-3 on Tuesday and 10-6 on Wednesday. UNLV also went 1-2 last weekend at Nevada.
Bryson Stott leads the team with a .406 batting average, 54 hits and 17 doubles. Kyle Isbel has a team-best 35 RBIs and a .702 slugging percentage and is second with 50 hits and nine home runs.
On the mound, Bryan Menendez has a 1.02 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched and 13 appearances with nine saves. Alan Strong leads the team with 46 strikeouts and four wins and has seven starts on the mound with a 3.21 ERA.
Stan Stolte is in his third season as the head coach at UNLV and is in his eighth year overall season on the Rebels' coaching staff. During his tenure with the Rebels, Stolte has developed seven MLB draft picks. He owns a record of 42-45.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE REBELS
West Virginia is 4-1 all-time against UNLV, with all five previous meetings coming in Las Vegas. The series began with a 15-6 win in 2000 and followed with a 4-3 loss in 2014. The two teams last met in 2016, a 3-0 sweep by the Mountaineers as the offense exploded for 31 runs on 40 hits.
In the opener on Feb. 26, WVU used three three-run innings, including in the ninth, to defeat UNLV, 9-6. Jimmy Galusky drove in the game-winner to begin a three-run ninth inning and Darius Hill capped a three-hit, four-RBI day with a two-run home run in the ninth to give WVU a three-run cushion.
The next day, WVU put on an offensive show as Ross Vance shut down UNLV in a 13-1 victory. The Mountaineers scored at least one run in six innings as Vance held the Rebels to one run on just three hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Hill paced the WVU offense with three hits for the second consecutive day and added three RBIs and scored two runs.
In Sunday's finale, WVU completed the sweep with a 9-4 win. Starter BJ Myers allowed one run, unearned, on three hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking one. West Virginia's offense, which had 14 hits, was led by KC Huth and Galusky. Both hit a home run and knocked in two runs, while Galusky went 5-for-5 in the No. 9 spot in the lineup and Huth went 3-for-4, hitting seventh. WVU also used the help of four UNLV errors.
ON DECK: PNC PARK & BACKYARD BRAWL
West Virginia will play a pair of midweek contests next week, at PNC Park on Tuesday, April 10, against Penn State at 6:30 p.m. ET, and at home on Wednesday, April 11, vs. Pitt, at 6 p.m.
The Mountaineers and Nittany Lions meet at PNC Park for the second season in a row, after WVU won last year's inaugural college game at the home of the Pirates, 4-2. The following day, WVU hosts Pitt in the Backyard Brawl at Monongalia County Ballpark. - West Virginia trailed 5-1 with no outs in the third inning, before Braden Zarbnisky, Sam Kessler and Shane Ennis pitched the final 7.0 innings and held NU to one run on three hits. Kessler picked up the win, pitching 1.2 shutout innings and allowing just one hit with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. Ennis earned the save, the second of his career, while allowing no hits in the final 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
- Zarbnisky got the bullpen's strong outing going, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Offensively, while starting the game as the designated hitter, he had a hit, drove in two runs, scored two runs and walked twice. Zarbnisky gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he stole home.
- Brandon White had a career-high four hits with two RBIs, while Darius Hill had three hits and scored two runs.
