WVU, St. Joe’s to Meet Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team continues play in the 2018 Postseason WNIT on Sunday when the Mountaineers host Saint Joseph's in second-round action at 2 p.m. EST at the WVU Coliseum.
General admission tickets are available at a cost of $5 dollars, while youth tickets are $3. Carey's Crew members receive free admission courtesy of United Bank, while students are also free. A valid student ID or Carey's Crew membership card must be shown to receive the free ticket. A discounted group rate of $2 is available, but must be purchased in advance. Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the call for the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans in the Morgantown area can catch the action on Jack-FM 100.9 as well as various affiliates across the state. The Mountaineers advanced to the second round of the WNIT for the fifth time in program history with an 83-50 win over Bucknell on Thursday. WVU's 33-point margin of victory was its largest ever in the WNIT. WVU has never lost a WNIT game at the WVU Coliseum, boasting a 10-0 record at home in the tournament.
Senior forward Teana Muldrow led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds, became the program's all-time leader in games played with 139. Muldrow was joined in double figures by senior forward Kristina King (13), senior guard Chania Ray (12) and junior guard Katrina Pardee (11).
Pardee, who recently moved into the program's all-time top 10 in 3-pointers, tied her career high with four steals. Freshman forward Destiny Harden tied her career high with eight points and four steals in 14 minutes of action.
The Hawks will mark the third opponent - second straight - that the Mountaineers have faced from Pennsylvania: Bucknell (W), Drexel (W), Pitt (W). WVU is 3-0 against teams from the Keystone State. SJU has also played Bucknell (W) and Drexel (L) this season. The Mountaineers have previously faced three of the remaining teams on their side of the bracket: Radford (W), Drexel (W) and Virginia Tech (W).
Saint Joseph's enters the second round of the WNIT with a 19-14 record after going 10-6 in the Atlantic 10 this season. SJU has won five of its last six games, with its lone loss coming at the hands of George Washington in the A10 Championship Game. The Hawks fell, 65-49, on March 4.
"You can't take any of these teams for granted," coach Mike Carey said. "You think you're playing a home and you're a Power 5, and they come in and beat you. They're hungry. They've got something to prove. St. Joe's is a good offensive team and they play hard. They could come in here and beat us.
St. Joe's is averaging 65.0 points and 37.6 rebounds per game and is shooting 43.0 percent from the field, 32.3 percent on 3-pointers and 67.2 percent at the free-throw line. Four of five starters average in double figures, with Chelsea Woods leading the way at 15.4 points per game. Woods also leads the rebounding effort, grabbing 7.7 boards per contest. Sarah Veilleux is averaging 12.8 points per game, followed by Amanda Fioravanti at 10.5 and Alyssa Monaghan at 10.1 points per game.
Two former league foes meet for the 25th time on Sunday. SJU leads the series, 18-8, overall and is 8-3 in Morgantown. The last meeting between the two came 23 years ago, with the Hawks claiming a 64-59 victory in Philadelphia for their sixth straight win. The series dates back to December of 1982, with West Virginia winning the four contests. WVU's last win came in January of 1992 when the Mountaineers took a 71-61 victory in Philadelphia and the Mountaineers WVU's last win at home also came in January of 1992 by a score of 93-57.
