Mountaineers, Longhorns Set for Rematch

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After suffering a setback at Oklahoma on Saturday, the No. 21 West Virginia women's basketball returned to Morgantown where the Mountaineers will host No. 8 Texas on Monday at the WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST on FS1.
Tracy Warren and Dan Hughes will have the call for FOX Sports, while Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the radio call for the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Due to conflict with WVU men's basketball coverage, The Ticket: 95.7-FM/920 AM will carry the game. Fans can also listen on WVUsports.com and the WVU Gameday app.
Tickets for the game are available for a special price of just $1. They can be purchased at WVUGAME.com, by calling 1-800-WVU-GAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. Student will be admitted for free with a valid student ID.
West Virginia and Texas meet for the second time this season and the 16th time overall on Monday. Texas leads the overall series at 9-6, but the Mountaineers are 3-1 in Morgantown. The Longhorns have been nationally ranked for eight of the last nine meetings, while WVU has been ranked for four of the last five. The two have met three times in the Big 12 Tournament, with WVU taking two of three meetings.
The most recent meeting between the two-game on Dec. 31, 2017 in Austin, Texas, when the Longhorns picked up a 79-58 win in Austin. Both teams were ranked in the top 10, as Texas was at No.8 and WVU was at No. 9. Junior guard/forward Naomi Davenport had a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds in the first meeting as the Mountaineers shot 31 percent in the loss - the team's second-lowest performance of the season.
Monday will be a matchup of two of the nation's best in WVU forward Teana Muldrow and Texas forward Ariel Atkins. The duo was recently announced as two of 10 candidates for the Cheryl Miller Award, presented to the nation's best small forward. Both lead their respective teams in scoring - Muldrow at 19.9 points per game and Atkins at 14.9 points per game. They also lead their teams in rebounding - Muldrow with 9.3 rebounds per game and Atkins at 5.9 boards per game.
Texas brings a 3-game win streak into the contest, while WVU will look to break a 2-game skid. The Mountaineers are coming off a 57-76 loss at Oklahoma on Saturday. Three players finished in double figures, with junior guard Katrina Pardee's 13 points leading the way. Senior forward Kristina King added 12 points, while junior guard Naomi Davenport had 11. West Virginia had a season-low five steals in the loss, and had 22 turnovers - second highest of the season.
Muldrow had a team-best 11 rebounds in the loss. It marked her 12th 10-rebound performance of the season, tying her for the league lead.
Texas comes into Monday's contest with an 18-4 overall mark and a 9-2 record in Big 12 play. Following a loss at Baylor on Jan. 25, the Longhorns enter the matchup on a 3-game win streak. The Longhorns average 82.5 points and 44.0 rebounds per game and they're currently shooting 46.3 percent from the field, 31.8 percent on 3-pointers and 71.0 percent at the charity stripe.
Atkins leads the scoring at 14.9 points per game and is followed closely by Lashann Higgs at 14.4 points per game as four of five starters average in double-figure scoring. Atkins also leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game. Brooke McCarty has a team-high 99 assists on the season, while Atkins leads the Longhorns with 63 steals.
Following the game, the Mountaineers will prep for Saturday's trip to Lubbock, Texas, for a tilt with Texas Tech.
