MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team caps its regular-season slate with a pair of nonconference duals, starting with a trip to Edinboro, Pennsylvania, for a match against Edinboro on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. ET.
Thursday's dual with the Fighting Scots will be available to subscribers at FloWrestling. Live stats will be provided on TrackWrestling.
"We have to continue to do what we have been doing," said fourth-year coach Sammie Henson. "Edinboro is a tough, hard-nosed team. The matchups are going to be key, and bonus point victories are going to be key. They have several guys ranked, and it's going to come down to matchups. We are confident in our schedule and how it has prepared us for our final week before the postseason. I'm excited about it. I want to see our guys perform and get the win."
The Mountaineers and the Fighting Scots meet for the 35th time since the series started in 1977, with Edinboro holding a 21-11-2 lead. Last year, the Fighting Scots, ranked No. 23 in the nation at the time, claimed a 27-10 victory over the Mountaineers in their final home dual of the season. However, WVU captured an 18-15 victory of their own in 2016 in Edinboro.
Most recently, West Virginia dropped a 24-9 dual to No. 12 South Dakota State on Feb. 11, at the WVU Coliseum, finishing its Big 12 schedule with a 4-4 mark overall. Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey (125), redshirt freshman Kyler Rea (149) and freshman Nick Kiussis (165) won by decision for the Mountaineers.
Moisey, ranked No. 14 14 in Intermat's Top-20 Poll, sports a team-high 19-7 record on the year, winning eight of his last nine duals at 125 pounds. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native also paces the Mountaineers with 35 match points and 25 takedowns on the year. Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith also appears in Intermat's Top-20 Rankings, checking in at No. 18 in his weight class of 197 pounds.
Edinboro saw its three-match win streak come to an end last weekend with a pair of losses at No. 5 Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Despite a pair of setbacks against Big 12 opponents, the Fighting Scot lineup features three nationally-ranked wrestlers by Intermat. Sean Russell ranks No. 10 at 125 pounds, Korbin Myers comes in at No. 17 at 133 pounds and Billy Miller appears at No. 14 in the heavyweight rankings.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers return home in three days for the always popular Beauty and the Beast Meet on Sunday, Feb. 18, set to start at 2 p.m. The squad will compete against Clarion, as the Mountaineer gymnastic team squares off against Pitt and Maryland. It is the home season finale for both programs, and the senior wrestlers (Parker VonEgidy and Smith) and gymnasts will be honored following the competition.
The Mountaineer Fan Festival also will be held Sunday prior to the start of competition. The Coliseum Gold Gate will open at 12:30 p.m., and one ticket will grant fans admittance into both events. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths and senior citizens and $2 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students are admitted free with a valid WVU Student I.D. Tickets are on sale now at WVUGAME.com and will be available for purchase at the Coliseum Ticket Office on Feb. 18.
"I'm excited. I think it's going to be a huge success," Henson added. "Having all the WVU varsity teams at the Mountaineer Fan Festival before the meet means a lot to me. It means that we are supportive of each other. Mountaineers support each other, and that's a great thing to have. I'm just happy that the administration was able to pull this off, and I'm looking forward to it."
