West Virginia (4-1) enters the weekend after a 1-1 outing at Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, Bahamas, last week. The Mountaineers dropped an 84-81 heartbreaker to No. 12/14 Iowa but rebounded to down Eastern Kentucky, 81-39. Redshirt sophomore guard Kysre Gondrezick averaged 19.5 points per game to earn Junkanoo Jam Bimini Division All-Tournament Team honors, while freshman guard Madisen Smith was named the Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Week for her efforts.
This year's meeting is just the second all-time between the Mountaineers and the Tigers. The lone prior meeting came on Dec. 22, 1996, at the Special Events Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, when West Virginia defeated Mizzou, 85-75, behind 25 points from Talisha Hargis.
Mizzou enters the contest with a 5-2 overall record and on a two-game win streak. The Tigers went 2-1 at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Fort Myers, Fla., last week. After falling to Michigan, 70-54, they rebounded with wins over Quinnipiac (65-51) and Duke (62-54). Senior guard Sophie Cunningham, a 2018 AP All-America Honorable Mention, leads the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game and is tied for the team lead in rebounding with 6.7 boards per contest. Junior guard Amber Smith averages 12.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and boasts a team-best nine blocks this season. Mizzou is averaging 63.3 points per game as a team and is shooting 39.5 percent from the field and 31.4 percent on 3-pointers.
"They don't have great size, but they have good players," Carey said. "They've got some shooters; they have some athletes. They have a really good guard (in Sophie Cunningham), who's about 6'1 and plays inside, outside. She can shoot the three, so we'll have to be aware of her."
The Mountaineers enter the 2018 SEC/Big 12 Challenge with a 2-0 record in the event. Las season, then-No. 11 WVU defeated No. 18 Texas A&M by a score of 70-56 at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas after defeating Ole Miss, 66-61, at the WVU Coliseum in 2016. The SEC enters the 2018 challenge with a 13-11 advantage, but the Big 12 has won the first two games in this season's edition.
