"Georgetown is a very good team," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "(Coach Brian Wiese) and I are good friends, and obviously go way back to the Big East days. We did see them a couple of years ago when we played them at Akron, and we ended up on the right side of that game. They're a very good team, athletic, big, can keep the ball and they can stretch you as well. They are well-coached and organized. I think that we can match possession with anyone in the country."
West Virginia is making its 13th NCAA Championship appearance in team history and fifth in LeBlanc's 13-year tenure. WVU is 6-12-0 in the tournament, with five of its six all-time NCAA wins, and six of seven second-round appearances, coming since 2005.
WVU tied several program NCAA Championship records in Thursday night's first round win. The four goals were tied for the most in an NCAA Championship match in team history, as junior defender Albert Andres-Llop also tied a program NCAA record with two assists. Additionally, WVU's first goal at 14:59 was its quickest score in NCAA Tournament play.
The Mountaineers enter Sunday's matchup having won 12 of their last 15 contests and their 14 wins are one shy of tying the program record of 15, set in 2006. West Virginia is ranked No. 17 in this week's Soccer America poll and No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings.
Statistically, WVU leads the MAC in nearly every category. The Mountaineers rank No. 2 nationally in total assists (51), No. 3 in points (135), No. 8 in goals (42), No. 10 in shot accuracy (.498), No. 11 in fewest fouls per game (9.55) and No. 12 in scoring offense (2.10). Additionally, West Virginia paces the MAC in saves per game (3.95) and save percentage (.752).
Individually, senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc ranks No. 6 in the country in assists (10) and No. 11 with five game-winning goals, while he leads the MAC with 1.53 points per game. Junior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino is No. 15 in the NCAA in shot accuracy (.609), and sophomore goalkeeper Steven Tekesky ranks No. 16 in minutes played (1801:37) and No. 25 in total saves (75).
