WVU Faces First Ranked Foe at No. 15 Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio – Winners of three in a row, the West Virginia University men's soccer team travels to No. 15 Wright State on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. ET.
WVU, which is facing its first ranked opponent of the season, has won six of its last seven matches, while WSU is coming off a 0-1-1 week that followed an 8-0-1 start to the year.
"Wright State has proven to be one of top teams in country so far this season," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Tuesday will be an incredibly difficult test for us against a really good opponent on the road."

The Mountaineers (8-4-0) are in the middle of a three-match roadtrip. West Virginia opened Mid-American Conference play with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory at Western Michigan on Saturday. WVU improved to 8-0 when scoring at least two goals in a game in 2018 and 16-0 in the last three years.
West Virginia ranks No. 15 nationally and leads the MAC with 15 assists, is 21st in the NCAA and first in the MAC with 67 total points and also paces the league with 21 total goals. WVU is second in the conference with 1.75 goals per game. Additionally, the Mountaineers' .831 save percentage is No. 15 nationally and No. 1 in the league, while their 4.08 saves per game and 0.833 goals-against average is the best in the MAC.
The Raiders (8-1-2) rank No. 19 in this week's TopDrawerSoccer.com poll, while they are No. 15 in the Soccer America rankings and No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25, both released last Tuesday. WSU ranks No 4 in the NCAA in goals per game (2.64), No. 5 in goals (29), No. 7 in points (84), No. 12 in assists (26), No. 13 in shots on goal per game (7.00) and No. 17 in shots per game (15.09).
Junior midfielder Sebastian Garcia-Herreros is No. 13 nationally with six assists, while junior defender Pascal Derwaritsch and junior defender Ryan Kellogg lead the Mountaineers with four goals. Kellogg has a team-best nine points, and junior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino is fourth in the conference with 1.36 shots on goal per game.
In goal, sophomore Steven Tekesky has five shutouts to lead the MAC and rank No. 13 nationally. He has eight career clean sheets, which rank No. 9 all-time in program history. Tekesky is No. 19 nationally in save percentage (.828) and No. 20 in total saves (48), both league-best totals, and he also paces the MAC in goals-against average (0.839) and saves per game (4.00).
SCOUTING WRIGHT STATE
Wright State is 8-1-2 on the season and 4-0-1 at home. The Raiders opened the year with an 8-0-1 mark, but are coming off a 2-1 loss at No. 6 Virginia on Oct. 2, and a 1-1 draw to UIC on Oct. 6. In Horizon League action, WSU is 3-0-1.
Alec Philippe leads the team with nine goals and 22 points, while Jackson Dietrich has a team-best nine assists. Deri Corfe is tied for second on the team with seven goals, has four assists along with Philippe and paces the squad with 43 shots and 24 shots on goal. In goal, Joel Sundell is 7-1-2 with 13 goals allowed and 29 saves for a 1.22 goals-against average and a .690 save percentage.
Jake Slemker is in his first season as head coach of his alma mater after serving as an assistant coach from 2010-17. He was a four-year starter as a defender at Wright State from 2003-06
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE RAIDERS
In a series that began in 1987, WVU is 5-3 all-time against Wright State. The Mountaineers earned a 4-1 home win last year, which followed a 3-1 loss in Dayton in 2015. In the 2017 victory, Jad Arslan scored twice, Derwaritsch and Garcia-Herreros each had a goal and Jorge Quintanilla notched three assists.

WVU came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory at Western Michigan on Oct. 6, to open MAC play.
Freshman midfielder Josh DiMatteo scored the game-tying goal in the 31st minute and Muriel Albino netted the game-winner in the 84th. It was DiMatteo's second goal of his career, both in the last two matches, while it was Muriel Albino's first as a Mountaineer.
Sophomore defender Kevin Morris and Garcia-Herreros earned assists on the Mountaineers' first goal, while Muriel Albino's was unassisted. It was Garcia-Herreros' fourth assist in the last three contests.
Western Michigan's goal came at 21:56 on a penalty kick. It was the first penalty kick attempt by a WVU opponent this season.
In goal, Tekesky made nine saves, and Lukas Von Lienen had five saves for the Broncos. Muriel Albino and senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc led the team with four shots apiece, and Muriel Albino had three shots on goal. WMU had 18 shots to WVU's 14, while the Broncos held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
