MAC Slate Continues at Akron Saturday

AKRON, Ohio – Mid-American Conference action continues for the West Virginia University men's soccer team at Akron on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. ET, at Cub Cadet Field.
WVU is tied for first place in the MAC, with three points, after a conference-opening win on the road last week, while UA, the league's defending tournament champions, is tied for third with one point.

"Akron is a great program and a proven champion," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Saturday night we'll have two fantastic soccer-playing teams that will hopefully produce a fantastic match, and we're looking forward to the challenge."

The Mountaineers (8-5-0) have won six of their last eight matches, and Saturday marks the end of a three-match road trip. West Virginia ranks No. 18 nationally and leads the MAC with 18 assists, is second in the league with 67 total points and third with 21 goals. WVU is fourth in the conference with 1.62 goals per game. Additionally, the Mountaineers' .806 save percentage and 4.15 saves per game leads the MAC, while its 1.00 goals-against average is second.
The Zips (5-4-2) lead the MAC with 22 goals and 68 points and sit just behind WVU, and No. 19 nationally, with 24 assists. UA is No. 23 in the NCAA and first in the conference with 2.00 goals per game.
Junior midfielder Sebastian Garcia-Herreros is No. 17 nationally with six assists, while junior defender Pascal Derwaritsch and junior defender Ryan Kellogg lead the Mountaineers with four goals. Kellogg has a team-best nine points, and junior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino is third in the conference in shot accuracy (.552) and fourth in shots on goal per game (1.33).
In goal, sophomore Steven Tekesky ranks No. 16 nationally with 53 total saves and is No. 20 with five shutouts, both which rank first in the MAC. He also leads the conference in save percentage (.803) and saves per game (4.08), while he is third in goals-against average (1.006).
SCOUTING AKRON
Akron is 5-4-2 on the season and 2-2-1 at home. The Zips are coming off a 2-1 upset victory at No. 8 Michigan State on Tuesday, their first win over a ranked opponent in five matches this year. UA opened MAC play with a 0-0 draw at Bowling Green last Saturday.
David Egbo leads the Zips with eight goals, 19 points, 34 shots and 13 shots on goal. Diogo Pacheco is second with five goals and 11 points, while Marcel Zajac has a team-best four assists. In goal, Ben Lundt has played every minute and owns a 1.31 goals-against average and a .634 save percentage. He has allowed 15 goals and made 26 saves.
Jared Embick is in his sixth year and owns an 84-27-13 record after reaching the NCAA College Cup a season ago. In his 12 years at UA, which includes six as an assistant, Embick has helped lead Akron to the NCAA Tournament each season, four College Cups and a national title in 2010.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE ZIPS
The Mountaineers trail the all-time series against Akron, 15-3-1. The last time in Akron, Ohio, in 2016, WVU earned a 3-1 upset victory over the No. 22-ranked Zips, 3-1. Joey Piatczyc scored the first goal, while Jad Arslan netted the next two. Last year, No. 9 Akron earned a 4-0 win in Morgantown.

WVU begins its final homestand of the season against No. 23 SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. ET, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. A Touch-A-Truck event will take place outside of DDSS, with various first responders vehicles on site. Additionally, it is Kids Club Day, with activities including balloon animals and face painting.
LAST TIME OUT: FIRST RANKED LOSS
Playing its first ranked opponent of the season, West Virginia lost at No. 17 Wright State, 3-0, on Oct. 9. The Mountaineers allowed more than one goal for just the second time this season and were shut out for the fourth time and the first since Sept. 10.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute and made it 2-0 in the 38th. They took a 3-0 lead in the 86th minute. WVU was out-shot, 14-12, and WSU held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Nine of the 12 shots came in the second half, with all four shots on goal coming in the final 45 minutes. WVU had six corner kicks, four in the second half, and WSU had five, all in the first half.
Tekesky made five saves, three in the first half and two in the second. Piatczyc led the team with three shots, while Derwaritsch, Muriel Albino and sophomore forward Spenser Myers each had two shots, one on goal.
