WVU Travels to George Mason Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coming off its first loss of the season, the No. 19 West Virginia University men's soccer team returns to the road to face George Mason on Saturday, Sept. 16, in Fairfax, Virginia. Kickoff at George Mason Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

The Mountaineers (3-1-2) are coming off a 3-1 loss at UMBC on Wednesday night. The defeat was WVU's first of the season, after opening the 2017 campaign with three wins and a pair of scoreless draws.
The Patriots (3-1-1) also have just one loss on the season and are a perfect 3-0 at home. On Friday, Mason beat Binghamton, 4-3 in overtime after a 2-2 draw in double overtime on Sept. 3. Along with the win over Binghamton at home, George Mason owns victories over No. 19 Coastal Carolina, 2-1, and American, 3-0.
Senior Jad Arslan's three game-winning goals rank No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference. He is also second in the MAC with four goals and eight total points. Junior Jorge Quintanilla ranks No. 2 in the MAC and ninth nationally with four assists, while he is also second in the conference with 0.67 assists per game.
In goal, junior Stephen Banick is sixth in the NCAA and second in the league with four shutouts and he ranks No. 2 in the MAC with a 0.497 goals-against average and a .850 save percentage.
West Virginia is ranked nationally in three polls and receiving votes in the fourth. The Mountaineers are No. 19 in the College Soccer News rankings and No. 24 in this week's TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. WVU enters the Soccer America rankings for the first time this season at No. 25. Additionally, West Virginia is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll and is No. 4 in the Great Lakes Regional rankings.
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON
George Mason is 3-1-1, with a perfect 3-0-0 record at home. The Patriots are coming off a 4-3 overtime win over Binghamton on Friday, which snapped a two-match winless streak. Mason also owns a 2-1 win over No. 19 Coastal Carolina.
Greg Andrulis is in his 13th season as head coach of the Patriots. He owns a 109-86-36 record and has guided George Mason to three NCAA Tournaments after a stint with Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew, including four years as head coach.
Henning Dirks leads the team with four goals, four assists and 12 points. Ryan Minqachos also has four goals for eight points. In goal, Corey Chambers has started all five games, and has allowed nine goals with 28 saves for a .757 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE PATRIOTS
The all-time series between WVU and GMU is tied 2-2, with both teams going 2-0 on their home field. West Virginia has won the last two meetings, 3-0 last season and 3-1 in 1999. The series began in Fairfax, Virginia, with a 4-1 victory for the Patriots in 1988 and a 4-0 George Mason win in 1998.
In last year's 3-0 win, Albert Andres-Llop netted the game-winner off a free kick in the sixth minute, while Felix Angerer and Joey Piatczyc also scored. Jose Santos made three saves.

West Virginia had eight shots, six coming in the second half. UMBC had 18 shots, with 12 coming in the first half. Junior keeper Stephen Banick made two saves, the first coming in the opening minutes of the match.
After UMBC took a 2-0 lead in the first half, Andres-Llop scored his first goal of the season for the Mountaineers in the 72nd minute on a free kick. However, UMBC answered three minutes later to make it 3-1. Andres-Llop led the team with three shots.
