United Bank Playbook: Kansas State
February 10, 2017 03:01 PM | Men's Basketball
West Virginia coach Bob Huggins breaks down Saturday’s critical matchup against Kansas State at the WVU Coliseum in today’s United Bank Playbook.
The Wildcats defeated the Mountaineers 79-75 in Manhattan back on January 21. All five K-State starters scored double figures and the Wildcats overcame a 12-point first half deficit the first time around.
Guards Jamau Stokes and Barry Brown scored 15 points apiece to lead Kansas State.
The Mountaineers’ defense struggled to get critical stops in the second half and they also turned the ball over a season-high 23 times.
WVU began the game missing its first six shots and then made seven of its next nine to build a 12-point lead, which it enjoyed on three different occasions in the first half. But a poor stretch right before halftime saw nearly the entire margin evaporate.
K-State took control of the game midway through the second half, leading by 11, before a 12-1 West Virginia run gave the lead back to the Mountaineers briefly. K-State’s margin was six points with 1:49 left when Nathan Adrian got a 3 to go down, but two Brown free throws and a layup iced the game for the Wildcats.
Since then K-State (16-8, 5-6) has lost four of its last five games, the lone triumph a 56-54 victory at Baylor on Saturday, February 4. The losses have come at Iowa State, against Tennessee in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, at home against TCU, and most recently, at home against Kansas.
West Virginia (19-5, 7-4) is coming off a 61-50 win at Oklahoma on Tuesday night, and has won four of its last five since the Kansas State loss. The lone defeat was an 82-75 verdict last Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma State at the Coliseum.
Saturday’s game will tip off at noon and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
The game was previously announced a sellout.
