December 27, 2017 06:12 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 9 West Virginia University women's basketball team travels to Texas to embark on its Big 12 Conference slate on Thursday when the Mountaineers take on TCU in a 7 p.m. ET tilt at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth.
Originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, the game was moved to 7 p.m. ET at the request of TCU.
Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will have the radio call on Jack-FM:100.9 in Morgantown/Fairmont for the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans can listen on WVUsports.com, the WVU Gameday app and online at TuneIn. A live video stream can be found at GoFrogs.com. Additionally, the game will be carried on WDPX-FM in Clarksburg, WSGC 96.5 FM/1490 AM in Braxton County, and WVAR 98.1 FM/600 AM in Nicholas, Webster and Fayette Counties starting at 6:45 p.m. ET.
The 2017-18 season marks the second consecutive season that WVU has opened Big 12 play at TCU. The two squared off in last season's Big 12 opener, with the Mountaineers claiming an 83-61 victory in Fort Worth. The Mountaineers are 2-3 in Big 12 opening games.
"We go out and play a TCU team that's (9-2)," coach Mike Carey said of starting league play. "After watching film, it's probably the best team they've had since I've been in the league. They're deep; they have a lot of guards, they have two big post players. They're very talented."
Overall, it will be the 14th all-time meeting between the two teams. West Virginia holds a 12-1 lead in a series that dates back to 1989 when WVU picked up a 73-71 neutral-site win. The teams met once more in nonconference play in 2010 as the No. 10 Mountaineers defeated No. 21 TCU, 62-49, also at a neutral site. West Virginia has been ranked inside the top 25 for six of the 13 prior meetings and twice appeared in the top 10: 2010 (No. 10) and 2014 (No. 7). The most recent game between the two came in February of 2017, with WVU taking a 77-73 win at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU and TCU share a common nonconference opponent in Texas A&M this season. The Mountaineers defeated No. 18/21 TAMU, 70-56, while TCU fell, 71-58, to No 21/22 TAMU.
The Mountaineers most recently topped Morehead State, 66-56, on Dec. 21 in Morgantown, marking the fourth undefeated nonconference season in program history and the 11th time WVU has gone undefeated at home in nonconference play under coach Mike Carey. West Virginia won 39 straight nonconference games inside the WVU Coliseum with the victory over the Eagles.
Senior forward Teana Muldrow recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win over the Eagles. The East Orange, New Jersey, native also went 5-for-5 at the line to make it 19 straight free-throws. Additionally, Muldrow moved into a tie for eighth-place all-time with 234 career offensive rebounds. Junior guard Naomi Davenport tied her career high with five steals in the contest.
The Horned Frogs enter the game with a 9-2 overall record and on a three-game win streak. They'll face a ranked opponent for the second time this season after dropping a game to then-No. 21/22 Texas A&M earlier this season. TCU is averaging 80.1 points per game and shooting 48.2 percent from the field.
The Frogs also average 7.5 3-pointers per game and are shooting 78.4 percent at the free-throw line. Junior forward Amy Okonwo leads the team in scoring with 16.4 points per game, while junior center Jordan Moore leads the rebounding effort with 7.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Kianna Ray averages 5.0 assists per game.
Following the game, the Mountaineers remain in the Lone Star State to take on No. 8 Texas on Sunday in a 4:30 p.m. ET tip in Austin.
