WVU Opens Home Slate vs. No. 13 Nebraska

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team opens its 2017-18 home slate against No. 13 Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 25, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

Saturday's match is the first of two Dollar Days planned for the year, with all tickets and select concessions available for $1 each. Additionally, the first 150 fans in attendance will receive a free WVU WWE-style t-shirt. Tickets are available by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVU-GAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum.
"We are excited to be home," said fourth-year WVU coach Sammie Henson. "It's going to be a tough match for us. Nebraska is a top-15 team. They have a very solid team. It's going to be a good test for us, but we are prepared. We had two solid tournaments where we were tested early on, so I'm looking forward to Saturday. We are ready to go."
Saturday marks the 11th all-time meeting between the Mountaineers (0-1, 0-1 Big 12) and the Cornhuskers (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten). The series dates back to 1980, with Nebraska owning a 9-1 advantage. WVU's last win against the Huskers came in 2002, as the Mountaineers took a 31-21 victory at home inside the WVU Coliseum. The two squads last met in 2016, with Nebraska earning a 42-6 victory at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Three Mountaineers rank inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes this week. Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith is ranked in the top 8 nationally by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native appears at No. 6 according to Intermat and FloWrestling and is ranked No. 8 by The Open Mat. Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey comes in at No. 17 in Intermat's latest top-20 poll. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native also ranks No. 18 via FloWrestling at his weight of 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt checks in at No. 20 via The Open Mat for the second consecutive week.
Schmitt, a Platte City, Missouri native finished the 2017 Lindenwood Open with a 4-1 record to place third in his respective pool for the second time in as many weeks. Moisey finished sixth at 125 pounds, while redshirt senior Parker VonEgidy (174) and junior Joe Wheeling (141) won the consolation brackets in each of their respective pools.
Of note, Nebraska competed in its first dual meet of the season on Nov. 17, collecting a 25-10 victory over Wyoming at the Devaney Center. The Cornhuskers also have five individuals nationally ranked by a trio of media outlets.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the fourth straight year, as the Mountaineers set to compete in the 2017 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational held on Dec. 1-2. Both days of competition are slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
