MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following two weeks off from competition, the West Virginia University wrestling team heads to St. Charles, Missouri, to compete in the 2017 Lindenwood Open inside Hyland Arena on Saturday, Nov. 18, with the first round of competition starting at 8 a.m. ET.
The Mountaineers return to the Lindenwood Open for the first time since 2015. The one-day tournament, previously known as the Joe Parisi Open, will consist of more than 600 wrestlers from over 40 different schools in the country, ranging from Division I institutions to NAIA schools. This year will be the seventh year that the Lions will host a tournament of this size, which will include over 40 All-Americans across all levels of college wrestling.
The event includes two divisions, the Black Division (freshman/sophomore) and the Gold Division (open). Live results from the Lindenwood Open will be available on Track Wrestling.com. The event also will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
Thirteen Mountaineers will compete in the Gold and Blue singlet this weekend.
"Going into this tournament, we want to be able to build off what we did opening weekend," said fourth-year coach Sammie Henson. "This open is the toughest I have seen it in years, and there are a few Big 12 teams here as well. We are looking forward to a highly competitive weekend. This type of competition is huge early on, and I'm excited for tomorrow's pools to take place."
The Mountaineers return to the mat for the first time since Nov. 5. The squad opened its 2017-18 season with a 24-9 loss to Big 12 foe Utah Valley on Nov. 3. Three Mountaineers picked up victories in their respective weight classes vs. the Wolverines, as redshirt senior Parker VonEgidy downed a top-20 foe at 174 pounds. The neutral-site match was held at Clarion Area Senior High located in Clarion, Pennsylvania, as both squads went head-to-head for the first time in program history.
West Virginia then remained in Clarion and placed fourth at the 2017 Clarion Open two days later. Redshirt freshman Kyler Rea went 5-0 in his pool to earn a first-place finish at 149 pounds. In addition to Rea's first-place finish, a trio of wrestlers placed third in their respective weight classes – redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt at 133, redshirt sophomore Zachary Moore at 157 and VonEgidy at 174. Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey also collected a fourth-place finish in the event at 125 pounds.
Of note, three WVU wrestlers rank inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes. Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith is ranked nationally in the top seven by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native appears at No. 6 according to Open Mat and is ranked No. 7 by Intermat and FloWrestling. Moisey comes in at No. 12 in FloWrestling's latest top-20 poll. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native also ranks No. 13 in the Intermat poll and checks in at No. 17 via The Open Mat at his weight class of 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, Schmitt enters Intermat's poll for the first time in his career at No. 20. The Platte City, Missouri, native collected three straight victories at the Clarion Open on Nov. 5, before dropping a 4-2 decision to then-No. 8 Dom Forys of Pitt in the semifinals. He finished the day with a 5-1 record, most notably winning by fall over Lock Haven's Tyshawn White in 3:56.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will open their 2017-18 home slate against No. 15 Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 25, and it is the first of two Dollar Days planned for the year. All tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. Additionally, the first 150 fans in attendance will receive a free WVU WWE-style t-shirt.
