Mountaineers Drop Fall Finale to Bucknell

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team closed out its fall season with a 7-2 loss to Bucknell on Sunday afternoon.
West Virginia scored two runs on three hits with two errors, while Bucknell scored seven runs on five hits with no errors. The Mountaineers' two runs came in the first inning, while the Bison were held hitless through five innings before scoring four runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth.
WVU's two-run first inning began with two outs. Freshman third baseman Tyler Doanes singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored on junior right fielder Darius Hill's double. Sophomore designated hitter Isaiah Kearns followed with a run-scoring triple to give WVU a 2-0 lead.
Junior right-hander Christian Young got the start on the mound and pitched 2.0 perfect innings, striking out two. Freshman lefty Jackson Wolf followed with 3.0 hitless innings, striking out four and walking just one. He picked off Bucknell's lone baserunner and faced the minimum in his three innings of work.
The Bison scored four runs in the sixth inning on two hits with two errors and three walks. Bucknell added to its lead with two runs on a double and a triple in the seventh. A wild pitch scored the game's final run in the ninth.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Cody Wood pitched 2.0 innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three. He entered the game with a runner on and no outs in the seventh and got the next three outs before a hitless eighth inning.
The Mountaineers conclude the fall exhibition season with a 2-1 record. WVU's previously-scheduled game on Saturday, Oct. 21, against Delaware State has been cancelled.
The 2018 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. The annual Leadoff Dinner is set for Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place Hotel. The Mountaineer Athletic Club will have information on how to purchase tickets and tables to the event in the coming weeks.
