MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17 West Virginia University baseball team earned its second win this season against in-state rival Marshall with a 12-2 victory in eight innings, Wednesday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 22-7 while the Thundering Herd fall to 14-17.
Sophomore Gavin Kelly went 3-for-4 with two RBI while sophomore Matt Ineich had two hits and scored three runs. Junior Armani Guzman and graduate student Sean Smith each had two hits and two RBI.
On the mound, graduate student Ian Korn earned the win with 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, striking out a pair. Senior Carson Estridge tossed the final two scoreless innings with two strikeouts as well.
Kelly opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single before Guzman added a second run with a bunt single. Smith scored the third run of the inning as Guzman was thrown out at second attempting to steal, the first time he has been thrown out this season in 20 attempts.
Marshall scored a run in the second, but the Mountaineers responded with two runs in the home half. Kelly hit his Big 12-leading 15th double of the season to drive in a run before senior Paul Schoenfeld knocked in a run with a groundout.
The Herd put a run on the board in the third and looked to add more in the fifth, but a great relay from Schoenfeld to Kelly to senior Matthew Graveline cut down the runner at the plate.
In the sixth, the Mountaineers put up a three-spot, the first run coming on a wild pitch before Smith hit a two-run double.
In the top of the seventh, senior Brock Wills threw out a runner at the plate from right field to keep a run off the board for Marshall before producing a run himself in the home half with an RBI single. An RBI groundout from junior Tyrus Hall gave WVU 10 runs for the night.
In the eighth, Guzman drove in a run with a productive out before freshman Zahir Barjam ended the game via run-rule with an RBI single, his first-career run batted in.
The Mountaineers return to Big 12 action this weekend in Lubbock, Texas for three games against Texas Tech from April 10-12. First pitch on Friday against the Red Raiders is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
