WVU Edged in Exhibition Game vs. Diamondbacks, 7-4
February 29, 2016 10:13 PM | Baseball
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The West Virginia University baseball team played an exhibition contest vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday afternoon in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a pair of hits in the first inning before suffering a 7-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. The seven inning exhibition contest at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Arizona’s Spring Training home ballpark, featured a mix of Major League and Minor League talent for the Diamondbacks.
“That was a lot of fun,” WVU coach Randy Mazey said. “Coming out in the first inning with a couple of hits and scoring a run and taking a lead, I like how this team feels about themselves. They’re playing with a lot of confidence right now, and I thought we showed very well today.”

WVU scored a run in the opening inning, wasting no time proving they were here to play. Freshman second baseman Cole Austin hit a one-out single and scored two batters later when sophomore left fielder Caleb Potter singled.

In the third inning, WVU added another run. Sophomore third baseman Kyle Davis advanced all the way to second base on a ball hit to the Diamondbacks’ second baseman, who misjudged the popup. After Austin and Potter walked to load the bases, Davis scored on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning, the Mountaineers scored their third run when center fielder KC Huth, named the Big 12’s Player of the Week just moments earlier, led off the inning with a single. He stole second and advanced to third on an error. Huth scored on a groundout by Austin.

West Virginia added another run in the fifth inning, again after the leadoff man reached base. Freshman Kyle Gray pinch hit for Potter and singled. He advanced to second when junior catcher Ray Guerrini walked, and scored when freshman pinch hitter Marques Inman doubled.
While official stats were not recorded, Guerrini reached base three times, with a hit and two walks, while Austin and Potter reached base twice.
